Wont heat over 200 with a new tank -

I've been in the propane business 28 years and have found regulators from the 1950's still in use today. Regulator manufacturers tell us they should be replaced after 25 years. It should typically outlast the grill itself, which often require new burners, cooking grids, etc. The hissing sound can just be the flow of gas thru the regulator. If you smell gas however, then you should replace it. If it is affecting the pressure to the burners and not getting hot enough to cook properly, then replace it as well.

Try turning off the valve to the tank, then leave the knobs on the grill open for 2-3 minutes. Turn off the grill knobs, slowly, slowly open the valve on the tank. Relight the grill and see if it gets hot.

This ma=y be a case of changes in parts for your VC Grill. The ownership of Vermont Castings changed 6 years ago, when Majestic Fireplace, who was then the owner went bankrupt and Monesson Hearth products bought VC in the bankruptcy. Shortly there after, Monesson made some sweeping changes to the grill line (your model was discontinued) and really up graded what Majestic Fireplace had done with that line of grills. Overall, they started building a better quality grill.

Unless you have a piped in high pressure propane gas system, the one that Appliance Factory Parts furnished you should work fine (based on what I saw on their website). In addition, if you purchased your grill, prior to the change in 20lb LP Gas Grill Tanks Valves, 6 years ago. Some manufacturers changed their grill hoses to conform with the new OPD Valve grill tanks. It wasn't required, they just did it, to avoid regulators locking up, when the tank valve is opened to fast.

I think the problem is with the Over Fill Protection Device valve in the propane tank and it's locked up the grill's regulator. To solve the problem turn the tank valve OFF. Disconnect the grill's hose from the tank and wait 5 minutes. Reconnect the hose to the tank and turn the tank valve ON VERY, VERY SLOWLY (Slow motion, slow). Once the valve is fully open, turn on and light the burner that farthest from the grill first. Does the burner light and the flame height look correct? If so, light the remaining burners the same way. Now, do all the burners flames look correct? If so, you solved the problem. Remember to always turn the tank valve ON very,very slowly.

If the above didn't solve the problem, you will need to replace the grill's hose/regulator assembly. You can purchase one at any home center or hardware store that sells gas grills and accessories. Take your old one with you for comparison purposes.

The easiest way is to install a flare T into the existing gas line and then adapt the existing hose from that...no teflon is needed on flare fittings and for the adapters use only gas approved teflon tape.

You problem could be or probably is with the regulator...not enough gas pressure...

Propane, LP, or Natural Gas Regulator Problems

That would be a regulator problem, assuming that the gas tank ain't almost shot...
Get a new regulator and that will get you that burger...

It is most likely the propane regulator. If it is under a year old the company should replace it for free. (The regulator is located on the gas line and is a round metal object near the propane tank.)

turn tank off make sure all knobs are turned off disconnect tank from grill reconnect tank turn tank on and try again if this does not work you probably need a new regulator and hose

It sounds like the regulator is shutting down and preventing the grill from getting all of the propane it needs. to remedy your problem disconnect the tank and then reconnect it. Usually that is all it takes to get the regulator to work properly. If the problem continues just get a new hose with regulator attached.
