I have a water heater with a honeywell gas valve #wv8840b1109 and the pilot went out and will not relight. No status light at all. Is there a battery on the circuit board? Can it be replaced?

More than likely the gas valve is defective.

Most likely it's time to replace the thermocouple, the safety device that makes sure the pilot is lit. New thermocouples are cheap and you can find them at most hardware stores and the big-box places (Home Depot, etc.)

Here is a site with basic information to get you going.

SOURCE: Tankless water heater pilot light will not stay on

It is most likely the water valve stuck open, telling the controls to heat water, that it thinks is flowing through it, but without actual flow it overheats. Depending on how comfortable you are with taking it apart yourself, you could open the valve to see if it just needs cleaned out, or if you have a ruptured diaphragm or some other cause.

The thermocouple has failed. It is the temp probe that goes from the pilot lite burner area to the control valve. Go to your local plumbng repair shop and buy one. Most appliance parts stores have them also. Take the old one with you and they will hook you up with an exact replacement. They are not that hard to change. Usually a nut or 2 screws in the temp bulb area at the burner end and a nut that threads into the control valve.
Make sure before you install the new one that the area where it mates to the gas valve is clean. Should be about a 20 min job including clean up with replacement parts in hand.

SOURCE: Pilot will not relight properly

Hi,
The thermocouple needs to be replaced. That is what keeps the pilot light lit. The thermocouple is the little metal probe that sticks up into the pilot flame. Very easy to replace.

New Reliance gas water heater won't stay lit

There is a sensor that shuts off the gas to the burner if a flame isn't detected within a few seconds. It will usually look like a tube that extends into flame of the burner. It may be defective or it may just need to be repositioned so more of it is directly in the flame.

Under the gas valve is a removable panel. On models of that era there should also be a second panel behind the first. remove both.

the pilot light should be clearly visible.

If no pilot, turn the gas valve to OFF. wait 60 seconds. locate the tubes from the gas valve to the pilot location. turn the valve to pilot, and with a long match or grill lighter lit, place flame at the pilot location and press down on the pilot button beside the main valve.

pilot should light. If not shut off the gas and call a technician. If yes, hold the pilot button for 60 seconds, then slowly release. Pilot should stay lit. If not, shut off gas and replace thermocouple, start relight sequence over. If pilot stays lit, replace inner cover and adjust temp to 120 deg. If heater fires up, replace outer cover. Done.

If heater does not light, replace gas valve or entire unit. Water heaters have a limited life expectancy, and if my recollection is correct your unit is 10yrs past warranty.

Is the honeywell wv8840B1109 like a smart meter. I was concerned after they installed this on my new water heater. It's basically an alarm for if the pilot shuts off. Seems awfully big to just be for that....

Thanks for photo link. Not a smart meter.
Just ordinary water heater gas control valve, with small circuit board to support error codes:

http://www.thetankatwaterheaterrescue.com/forums/forum3/
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-Honeywell-gas-control-valve.html
How the newer gas control valves are different: Old water heater had thermocouple which supplies very tiny current to gas control valve. When pilot light blows out, the thermocouple no longer sends tiny current and gas control valve shuts off gas to heater.
New gas water heaters have thermopile (just like modern furnaces and stoves), which is basically several thermocouples bunched together. So thermopile sends more current to gas control valve, and supplies enough current to power small circuit board. The circuit board records error events and issues simple error codes. If pilot blows out, then thermopile no longer sends current and gas control valve shuts off gas to heater.
Moreover, the new gas control valve can be repaired and replaced without removing from tank. So tank does not have to be drained... saving time and repair cost.

You can reset the code by turning Gage all the way up highest setting count to ten turn it to hot could to ten then turn to pilot count to ten and then turn it to desired temp burner should come on. Saves lots of money and time

Pilot light goes out when i release the button

Question posted under Reliance gas water heater.
Add comment for different brand.
Age of heater is unknown.
Status light indicates one of the Honeywell electronic gas control valve.
Status light not blinking indicates that water heater gas control not receiving electrical power for power vent models.
Or thermocouple is bad on non-power vent models
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-gas-water-heater.html#intellivent

Depending on model, and age, the thermocouple can be tested and replaced. Or entire burner assembly is replaced.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermocouple.html

If the gas control valve has gone bad because of power surge or other anomaly, then the power-vent type gas control is removed from tank and replaced, while the non-power-vent model is module and can be snapped off front of unit.

AO Smith water heater about 4 years old pilot went out took out piolt assembly cleaned and was able to relight pilot unit stayed working for about 2 weeks and went out again any ideas?

It sounds like your flame detector (usually a thermocouple) has gotten weak and when you cleaned the pilot the stronger flame was able to generate enough power to keep the gas valve working. If you replace the thermocouple your problem should go away. If a new thermocouple will not keep the gas valve operating...the coil in the gas valve has gone bad and you will need to replace the gas valve assembly. (most valves do not have replaceable coils).
