How do I hang an object using drywall anchors?

Use a hollow wall anchor similar to this design (This design is my preferred drywall/plasterboard anchor and I use them all the time) -

If you hit a timber stud inside the wall while drilling the guide hole, simply use an appropriate timber screw to anchor the grab rail mount to. These metal anchors are easy to use and very robust.
Avoid using plastic self drilling anchors. They are low load bearing, sometimes fail when being drilled into the wall leaving a hole and forcing you to relocate your fixture and are difficult to extract the anchor screw from once you've completed mounting your hardware. What molly bolts are you talking about. A molly or molly bolt, often misspelled moly,[1] is a formerly trademarked[2] name for a specialized screw fastener used with drywall, as a hollow-wall anchor. Larger sizes permit reasonably heavy objects, such as shelving, flat screen-TV mounts or central-heating radiators to be attached to drywall in locations where there is no stud behind the drywall. Wow all those answers are ok but easy way is to wad up a piece of paper larger than the hole-force piece of that paper into hole slowly not to force into cavity behind just slightly flush then stop-take a putty knife and float with drywall compound you can get a small container of that compound at walmart even-then repeat and sand between coats until you are flush and smooth-if there is a texture then on last coat take a roller and run it thru the wet compound

There are larger screw-type anchors available at a hardware store. If the hole is a half inch, you can possibly use an expanding wing type "molly" anchor. it's hard to assemble the screws through the bracket, then put on the butterfly, and shove the folded butterfly into the hole, but it's doable.

unscrew the bolt until the toggle falls off into the wall cavity. Then just pull out the anchor and spackle over the hole.
A molly bolt is a similar type of wall anchor. It's often confused with a toggle, but a molly's "bendable" legs are part of the anchor and will remain in place when the bolt is removed. Sometimes you can straighten those legs out by unscrewing the bolt partway, then pushing it back into the wall cavity. If you're lucky, you might be able to pull the anchor out through its own hole. If not, you'll have to use a punch and hammer to pound the head just below the drywall surface, then spackle over it.

I like the plastic zip-it anchor because it is pretty strong for towel rack or shelf with a few books etc, It simply drills flush into the wall and then you can use a regular pan-head or drywall screw to connect shelf to zip it. Later the zip it can unscrew and hole is filled easily.

Wall dog is nice for 1 step into drywall. Lightweight shelf, with 2 small books and vase..

Toggle bolt for heavy shelves, But requires good sized 1/2" hole drilled first, and takes a few skill techniques.

To locate wood framing in the wall you will need an electronic "stud-finder", which can detect the relative change in density of materials within the wall and will sound an alarm when those materials are encountered. However, the odds the framing is exactly where you want to hang the towel bar is slim. Another option is to use anchors - there are different types of anchors for drywall, for lath and plaster, and for tile/tileboard. There are anchors that will work for your specific application.

The folks at your local hardware store will make sure you get the right type of anchor. Then follow the instructions that come with the anchors and the towel bar.

There are many different models of these drywall anchors, some of which will not allow a too-long screw to be used. But the plastic ones shouldn't have this problem, because the tip (inside the wall) is supposed to split apart. However, you have to drive the screw a bit harder when you get to the point where the plastic starts to split. Do a google image search for---- ez anchor self drilling drywall ---- to see a few useful images.

Will be best.

Yopu can buy them at any hardware store. They screw right into the drywall and then another typical screw goes through the mounting plate into this anchor.

I recoment getting metal anchors as the plastic ones break easily.

These hold MUCH better than the push in plastic anchors.
