My phone is not working yet. I have my old number and old phone and have not transfered to my new phone

I think you can through the data assistant tool to detect your phone quickly, even your phone is broken, it can be detected quickly.
You just need to choose the files to back up the computer, then connect your new phone on computer, copy the data like contacts to your new phone.

Your old Carrier needs a request from you once you have your Phone settled with a new Carrier to port your Phone Number over. This is usually a no cost service.
But never just quit one Carrier and then go over to a new one if you want to keep your old number. Once the new number is working on your new Phone you can quit the old Carrier. For a minimum of a couple of days you need to have an overlap in your payed accounts. Until the number is successfully ported over.
Now you don't say if you are changing Carriers too.
If your new Phone has the bandwidth compatible with your Carrier, and they allow you to 'bring your own phone', simply transfer the SIM Card into your new phone.
