Does this happen with every spool of thread? If so, you either aren't starting the seam correctly or have slightly misthreaded, or the machine is in need of adjustment. Hold both the bobbin and top thread ends together behind the presser foot for the first few stitches of each seam -- then you can drop and sew normally. Not all machines need to have the thread ends held, but enough do that you might as well get in the habit.

Hi Fixya. I decided simply to measure the seam width I needed and place the quilting guide at that point. Then I used the position of the quilting guide as a guide in stitching a straight seam.
