look at the under carriage of the machine by removing the bottom plate under the free arm and the right hand cover as well.

When you get the cover off the bottom look for the feed base spring that pulls the feed dogs down in the feed mechanism. If it is broken it will have one of the spring hooks broken off the end of the spring.

The feed cam to the right of the shuttle drive gears moves the feed dogs up and down and the feed regulator moves the feed dog’s front to back. Make sure that the stitch length control is at 4 the maximum rate. If you look to the right of the feed dogs and turn the stitch length control from 0 to 4 back and forth you will see the feed regulator change position if it is working correctly. You can follow that back to the right where the arm comes down from the cam stack and moves that mechanism.

Usually the feed dogs stay down until you begin to stitch when they will rise... or you should take it for service.

Your machine will have a flip type opening at the very front of your machine above the area where the needles are attached to the arm that moves up and down ( it usually has the light globe installed in there ) after opening that door you will see where the dog feed is attached to it should also have a spring that helps the dog feed return to the up position when not in use , make sure it is not stuck in any way and some lubrication oil should be used to prevent it from sticking , while using the dog feed release button push the spring in a up and down motion to help it to dislodge

Testimonial: "Please contact me again. The sewing machine's feed dog mechanism is UNDER the needle. if it goes up into the main compartment with the light, shafts, etc, I do not see how. There must be a mechanism UNDER the bed of the machine? I have a LOT of sewing to do, I am leaving on a trip!!! HELP"

SOURCE: feed dogs

I was having trouble with this too, but found more help online...you have to switch the dog feed back to 'up'....then turn the needle wheel toward you....the feed dog should snap back into place :)
Hope this helps :D

You probably have a bind in the feed dog mechanism. If you can remove the covers and manually force them down you will see the hinge points that need to be oiled.
Unplug first!
Good luck.

SOURCE: Feed dogs do not come back up after lowering

Are you talking about the feed dogs or the presser foot. Either way, if you moved a lever to lower them, there is probably a screw that either fell out or has become loose that holds the linkage to the lever.

Pull out the removable table and you will see the drop down feed dogs switch lever behind the back of the machine. Move that lever to the left or right to have feed dogs go back to normal sewing mode OR for embroidery mode.

Says lower feed dog. It is lowered

The drop feed plate could be damaged of bent near the hook race. Then the feed dog could be binding and not dropping all the way down. Replace the plate. There is a micro-switch that reports the feed dog status. This switch may not be activating correctly when the feed dog lever is moved up and down. The switch will need to be checked for damaged wires/connectors and replaced if faulty. This should be done by a good sewing machine repair person.

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with the make and model of the sewing machine for information on the correct drop feed plate.

Kenmore sewing machine feed dog

Probably it is the spring loaded cam on the lower shaft not moving as it is bound up. The feed drop lever pushes it to the left to lower the feed dogs, but it has to spring back on its own after you move the lever back.
If you can remove the lower free arm cover you may be able to work it loose. Do not use 3 in 1 oil as it is gummy. Better to get Lilly white sewing machine oil.
Hope that helps!

Kenmore model 17821

if you have a instruction manual for the machine, then check to find out where the feed dog lever is, and check to see if the feed dog is in the up position to sew or in the down position, if the feed dog lever is in the up position and will not feed the fabric, then the machine need to be check to see what's wrong with the feed dogs.

Thread goes off screw when i start sewing

Could it be that the feed dogs are down? I also have the 15358 and when I opened the bobbin area to clean it, I had this problem. Apparently, when you open the clips around the outside of the casing, it pushes the lever that adjusts the feed dogs to the right (lowering them). I didn't even realize it at first. Check your manual for adjusting this lever to raise the feed dogs. That might solve your problem.

Sounds like you need a new needle and the upper tension tightened. Try putting machine oil on the feed dogs and working it up and down until it is free again. You can take off the lower plate and clean any lint that may have collected underneath. Then make sure the thread is coming out of the bobbin correctly before it is inserted in the machine.

Remove extension table/accessory box by gentle pulling it away from machine. You are left with just the free arm. In the back of the free arm, lower left corner, you will fine the feed dog lever. Push the leaver to the right to lower the feed dog.Instructions for lowering and raising the feed dog are on page 48 of your owner's manual. Good luck!

Feed dog is stuck

I have the same problem...this is a work around, not a fix. You need a small flat-head screwdriver. 1. Remove the clear bobbin cover. 2. Make sure the feed dog switch is in the DOWN position. 3. Slide the screwdriver under the feeddogs from inside the bobbin area & lift the feed dogs. 4. While holding the feed dogs in the up position, return the feed dog knob to the up position. You have to do this every time you put the feed dogs down...bummer, but I can find no broken part or adjustment that corrects this. If it's inside the machine body, I don't mess with it... I did take off the bottom plate in the feed dog area..one screw holds it.... there is nothing there to indicate a problem.
