Sounds like the starter dogs may be out of place so it can't engage into the starter like it should. And if the cord won't come out then it could be pinched between the starter cup and the pully.

SOURCE: Lawnmower Starting Pull Cord Replaement

There will be a piece of casing that holds the starter mechanism in. Usually held by 4 screws (probably torx screws unless it's an old machine).
Undo these screws and you will find the cord carrier inside.
Observe how the starter dogs are located, and how it all goes together.
You may be able to remove & replace the cord without taking the carrier off the casing, but it is probably easier if you do.

Then you simply remove the old cord, thread a new cord through the hole & tie it. Reassemble the carrier onto the casing. Thread the cord out of the casing & through the handle, tie that end.
Then wind the cord around the cord carrier until there is a slight tension on the spring.
Screw the casing back on the mower and you're away.

SOURCE: replace pullcord on troy built mower

Replacing the rope is not difficult but tricky. I believe that your model has a fuel tank on top of starter cover, empty fuel and remove tank to expose starter cover. Remove the starter cover and place it on your workbench with the plastic rewind spool visible and remove the old rope noting how it was tied. The rope is sold in various sizes from # 3 to # 6.5. Most mowers use a #4.5, with length of about 6 to 7 feet. You may not need this much but more is better. Now practice inserting the rope thru the hole where it comes out of the cover into the hole where it ties on the spool. Once you can do this you are ready to wind. The spool /spring winds when you pull the rope, that why it recoils when you let go of the rope. With that in mind, turn (wind) the spool in the same direction that it turns when you pull the rope. It should be getting tighter as you turn. Keep winding in the direction that it turns when you pull the rope untill it will not go anymore. It should be very tight. Now unwind one complete turn and align the hole of the spool to the hole in the housing and hold it there while you insert the rope from outside hole into the spool and tie knot. After the knot is tied slowly let rope rewind into the spool untill it stops on its own. You are done. You should have plenty of extra rope left to extend out to the handlebar. Enjoy

Remove the housing covering the clutch. The cord spool can then be accessed. Replace the cord. Be careful that you maintain the proper spool spring tension. Check operation before reassembling

Cord won't pull more than a few inches on new mower. Seems locked up. I've only ran it once.

Ensure the cable for the dead man switch is not kinked. Follow the cable from the handle to the engine. There are 2 bolts that mount the dead mans switch to the engine , remove bolts, remove dead mans switch from engine, let hang, try starting. If starting, clean dead man contacts and reinstall. You may have to remove recoil rope assembly and engine cove to get to dead mans switch.

Hi, I have a Masport 635 Lawn mower, I think it is 2 stroke, just petrol ( not mixed with oil ). I don't know anything about how to maintain mowers. But today I mowed the back yard, it went fine, then...

If it is two stroke it must have oil mixed in with it. Try pulling the cord and notice if there is any compression if not then it is the pistion and if it doesn't turn then it is seized with lack of oil.Now if it is four stroke take the plug out put it to the head and pull the cord to see if there is any spark if there is it's a fuel problem.

How much oil does the sump require in a talon AM3050 lawn mower? Can't find my manual

Hi,

It's very difficult to find information for this specific mower, however, most petrol mowers have a reservoir size of 1 pint / 0.5 litre. You should have a dipstick for checking the oil level anyway.

Basically, I suggest you drain the sump and add 0.5 litres of oil to ensure that the machine is neither low on oil or overfilled. Then call/email the manufacturer on Monday for clarification and/or a new manual.

4 stroke mower tipped onto side and now will not start

Start with the basic
Fuel, try starter fluid, see if it kicks
Fire, arc the spark plug while pulling the cord, 50/50 you get the zap.
Compresson, put you finger over the spark plug hole, pull the cord.
After you have tried these, come back and give me the model as well, some units are famous for certian problems.
I am betting fuel.

The part you are after is called a starter pawl, i know because the same thing happened to mine. Unfortunately you can't buy just the pawl, they only sell a flywheel kit which is about $35 which contains the flywheel and two pawls.
