Yes you can. A Soundblaster Audigy FX would work. Be careful to get a PCIe card, and not the older style PCI card. Your PC ships with several free PCIe slots.

You should install the sound card in the PCIe 2.0 x1 slot if possible. If not any of the others should work as well.

if you have a legal copy of windows xp, you should use windows update and it should automatically list your hardware drivers also.

Laptop speakers are usually **** so you could spend a lot of time and money on something that won't make a difference. Try plugging in external speakers to the headphone jack. If the sound is good don't bother looking for a fix.

you need to update to windows 8 when you have updated you need to remove your soundcard and reinstall it.then you need to reboot your system windows will then find your soundcard and automatically update your drivers.hope this is of use.
