I too have had the "Dust on Drum" problem many times now. It seems that sometimes I have been successful in getting it cleaned and working again, but this time it just won't work again. Any help will be much appreciated. It says that it has 56% drum life left but that is until my wife throws it though the window which will end it's life. Help Please. From a frustrated user.

These standard suggestions don't work... While I don't get the "Dust on Drum" anymore, I cleaned the drum well many times, but the pages come out smeared with black toner... and I didn't print more than 3000 pages with it.

I tried the FixYa solution about turning off, running clean paper through, and turning back on - it worked!

It was really difficult to turn the gear, and I was worried about breaking it, so when I was able to turn the printer back on and print, I just printed 20 blank pages, and noticed some black specs of toner coming off.

    Works great now!

i have the same problem. keep getting "dust on drum" message and now my printer isnt working...really annoying.. what do i do???

  • birthnurse Jan 08, 2009

I got this message also.  I actually had installed a new drum because I print so much, and the new drum was working fine until this message.  I will try the damp cloth thing and see if that works.  The only other solution I have it to order another drum and toner, because I am dead in the water without this printer.

I have the same problem.  The error message on my Brother 7820N says Dust on Drum and no matter how many times I take out the drum and clean it off, I still get the same error message.

I had this problem too. I took out the drum and vacuum the drum with a vacuum cleaner ( no brush ) while at the same time manually rotate the drum cyclinder. It worked. After a month or two, you might have to do it again. But everytime, it solved the dust problem.

Hi Txguy76,

How many pages did you printed from this drum? If you used this drum over 12,000 printed pages, you should replace with a new drum.

Do you clean corona wire of drum? Take drum out of machine, clean corona wire by gently sliding the blue tab from right to left several times; then, return the blue tab and snap it into the home position (triangle sign). Install toner and drum into your machine and print test.

Good luck to you.

I unpluged the fax/printer, took the drum out. took out the toner Cleaned the drum roller with a damp cloth then dried it very well. Moved that blue tap thing of the drum back and forth a few times. put it all back together and into the machine. Turned it back on. And WOO HOO it finally worked. Thanks for all the tips.

I have had same problem. Try this. Turn off/unplug machine. Take out drum, remove cartridge. Locate the colored roller and insert clean plain paper. Rotate gear to feed paper through. Look at the junk on the paper!. Clean the corona wire by sliding the blue tab thingy as per the manual. Then replace cartridge, drum, turn on machine and hopefully - hey presto!
Good luck.

Am machine drum damaged(pit marks)my machine model cannon6570i

Step1 Put on your latex gloves to protect the drum from skin oils. Cover a firm, stable working surface with a few sheets of clean newspaper to prevent spreading toner dust over your work area.
Step2
Disconnect your Canon copier from its power source and allow it to cool down for several hours if it has been used recently. Locate the access door to your toner cartridge and drum, typically located on the front or side panel depending on your specific model.
Step3 Remove the toner cartridge from its holding tray by lifting from both sides and pulling it up gently. Gently shake the cartridge to remove caked on dust, then place it on top of the newspaper sheets. Using your vacuum's hose attachment, clean away any toner dust from the cartridge's holding tray.
Step4
Lift the hinged door behind the holding tray to expose the copier's drum. Turn the spindle to the side of the door to rotate the drum. Apply a microfiber cloth to the outside of the drum as it rotates to clean away toner dust. Continue until the drum is as clean as possible.
Step5
Close the hinged door and replace the cartridge in its holding tray, ensuring that it is oriented the same way as when you removed it.
Step6
Reconnect your copier to the power source and make a test copy to ensure proper function.

Drum error

Does it say only "drum error", or "dust on drum error" etc?

First try cleaning, this is the easiest and cheapest way.
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/eu/gb/en/faq/faq/000000/000400/000035/faq000435_001.html?reg=eu&c=gb&lang=en&prod=mfc7420_all&Cat=7

If this does not help, your drum might be damaged and you need to change it.

When replacing the drum, you might also need to reset the drum counter.

  1. Open the front cover.
  2. Press the Options key on the control panel.
    The display
    will show "REPLACE DRUM - 1.YES 2.NO".
  3. Press 1 to reset the drum count.
  4. Close the front cover.

I have a brother mfc 7820N and it says there is dust on the drum. I have taken it out and blown on it, but I don't know what else to do. It won't print at all! Help!

there is a thin black wire that runs across the drum. Then at the very end of the wire there is a small plastic piece that you could move across the wire that should clean it out.

I have cleaned the drum but my printer won't work because it keeps saying Dust on Drum. do I ned to replace the drum?

You need to run that blue tab back and forth about 20 times to clean the drum corona, use canned air and blow out the area below the blue tab on the drum, wipe the metal contacts on each side of the drum, and if all that fails, you do need a new drum.
