The B&S Vangaurd engine requires periodic valve lash adjustment (100 hrs by schedule). Overdue valve lash adjustment typically manifests with starter stall (starter engages, rotates engine, hesitates or stalls, and then spins/starts).

SOURCE: My Briggs & Stratton gives off a puff of blue

Sounds like you may have too much oil in the engine. Check your oil level.

SOURCE: Engine seems to flood out when increasing speed and dies

If it starts lightly smoking black smoke at high RPM it is flooding or getting too much fuel. The float is leaking you may have not set the float height correctly when you put that carb back together. Or the needle and set could be bad.

SOURCE: Troy-Bilt Briggs & Stratton 550 restarting

Troy, Unless you are using old fuel (it breaks down after 1 week) it sounds like you have a faulty spark plug. Replace this first, drain any old fuel and replace with fresh fuel (premium unleaded). A faulty plug will work one minute but then fail like you have described.

1996 briggs and stratton backfires what can i check?

Does it start but backfires when running? Or does it just fire/backfire when trying to start? First thing I would check is the flywheel crank key isn't sheared. If the key us ok then check valve clearances

Backfiring

Backfiring is either burned valves or often due to timing slipped because of broken flywheel key/keyway.
