1. Take off the the power plug
2. take off the battery
3. press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds

Now try turning it on, if it still doesn't work, check in your manual how to RAM cover, and take the RAMs out (before you do this repeat stpes 1-3). After the ram is out, try turning it on if you hear sirens , that could be at least some indication that your motherboard is alive. if no sirens --- than you got bad news.

So at least you will now if there is a chance if the motherboard is not dead.

Dark monitor

Hello,
If your LCD screen on your laptop is really dark and pressing the brightness function keys does not make it any better then you probably have a failing backlight. This pretty much means, time to either replace the screen altogether or buy a new laptop.
You can get screens off ebay for about $130

My one and a half year old Lenovo SL500 is getting extremely hot under the left side of the machine... I can hear the fan working hard almost all the time. I am scared that something will be...

The ThinkPad SL500 usually comes with a Core 2 Duo processor, which is a fairly powerful processor. You may also have chosen to buy a discrete graphics chip with the laptop (instead of using the Intel Integrated Graphics). System components like these generate a large amount of heat. It is the fans job to push this heat away from the precious system components. This is very difficult in a laptop, because the components are very compact, and the only way for heat to escape is through the sides (heat wants to rise). When doing processor or graphics intensive tasks (such as editing/encoding a video or watching a move in High Definition), the fan has to work near its maximum to keep the computer cool. While it may sound intimidating, the fan will never push itself to a breaking point unless there is a problem with its design, in which case Lenovo will pay to get you a replacement. Even if there is a problem, if the processor gets too hot, the computer will instantly shut itself down before any heat damage can be done to the components, and you will be certain that the laptop has faulty hardware.

Feel the side of the machine where the exhaust comes out; you should be able to touch it for a few seconds without burning yourself even while doing intensive tasks. If it is too hot to touch, you may want to contact Lenovo and see what they say.

I have a lenovo laptop and Microsoft office. How do I do a screen shot on this thing? The office won't let me ''paste' it for some reason.

Sometimes when the right click options do not work, you can revert to the old DOS command short cuts. I am unsure of the Fn + "F" key stroke to take a screen shot but the keyboard short cuts for copy, cut and paste are: copy is Ctrl + C, Cut is Ctrl + X, Paste is Ctrl + V

I am having problems bringing my Lenovo Thinkpad up from hibernat

Go the their webiste and make sure you have got all their latest updates.

Try turning the hybernation off and see if the screen behaves correctly when you close and open the laptop.

This can also indicate a motheroard problem. beware... it may stop working at all.. so if you have any data in it that you need, i would suggest purging it on DVDs. and backing up (otherwise you will pay couple hundreed bbucks later for recovery in case the computer deis).

For now, just trun off the hybernation and see if it works.
