I am locked out of my trio tablet and can't remember the password and when I try to do a hard reset the tablet just turns back on and doesn't go to the boot menu

i think you will have to do a hard reset to sort this out.
Just tap the Power button to select Reboot System Now.

1. Make sure tablet is powered off.
2. Hold down Volume + button and Power button at same time.
3. When screen comes on let go of Power button.
4. When the large Android shows on screen let go of Volume + button.
5. Use Volume - button to scroll to Wipe Data/ Factory Reset.

Perhaps the HARD RESET PROCESS can help you, Merrill. I've posted my suggestion as to how it's done HERE. ( http://www.fixya.com/support/t25341481-trio_stealth_new_when_power_goes ) , so you may findt that information useful.
I've had good success with HARD RESETTING when trying to correct errors like forgotten password, or forgotten lock-patterns. However, I've had a Trio Stealth G2 that displayed the SAME problem as yours, Merrill, and it would NOT respond to ANY attempts at resetting. I tried every combination I could : pressing volume down (-) and power; volume UP (+) and power; volume UP & DOWN (+ AND -) and power. It refused to boot. But since the case and the screens were in great shape, I went on Ebay and bought a Trio with a cracked screen, swapped the motherboard from THAT tablet and it worked perfectly.
Final caution, though: ask the Ebay seller to guareantee the physical condition of the ports and other controls on the unit before you buy it. Remember you need a working motherboard.

Hi,
Does the device have a password lock on it.
If it does try removing this first, then attempt a hard reset.
You can access the engineers menu by holding the volume - button and then pressing the power button whilst turning it on.

Other than that the only other option is to reload the ROM with a flash utility.
But this is not for the faint hearted :-)

sounds like the hard drive is froze up

you should know it... you know those things can be traced if stolen.
