What I would try is replacing the co-ax cable from the antenna with the best quality you can find (not cheap), and make it as short as possible, then connect the amp. to this, then use another length of HQ co-ax from amp. to TV or recorder (if you are using one). In my own set up, I have two aerial amps, one for TV, one for DVD recorder, to ensure the best possible quality signal to each.
if it opens back up when you close it the drawer mechanism is probably out of alignment. Most players have a slot on the bottom of the drawer that a pin must slide in. Look under the drawer and see if there is a pin sticking up that maybe should be in that slot.
I have found out that the Hitachi AX-M138 was only ever distributed in the UK by DSG (Dixons / Currys) so you could try their spare page at www.mastercare.co.uk to see if they can supply you with a manual. I've had a look & they no longer list it but it's worth an email to them. Otherwise I have a copy if your interested.
