Hey Dan,
this depends on what type of kill switch you have...
one type kills (breaks the hot wire) the connection and one type makes the connection to ground..(grounds it out).. try to bypass the kill switch to see if it will run..

Testimonial: "If I hold the kill switch "in" with my finger, the engine will start and run just fine. However, I can not determine how to put the "safety pull away" part so that it holds the switch in this "in" position. As soon as I let go with my finger, the button comes "out" and the engine stops just as intended with the kill switch. I look at another kill switch on a different boat, and it seems as though the "safety pull away" part holds the kill switch "out" and when you remove this piece, the kill switch goes "in" and kills the engine. Not sure if I am make sense. But it seems as though the two kill switches do not work in the same manner. ???"

You are missing the piece that holds it "out".. check with your local Mercury dealer

this is a little confusing...the local dealer can help,, I know,,no one wants to spend money there either..

I don't mind spending money. I was just trying you first. And, I need something to hold the switch "in" not "out". It is not my boat so I need to verify additional information but will continue to work on it. By passing the switch will work during the interim. Thank you for your help.

serial number is what you need and try looking on the starter or the switch box ( square box with lots of wires on as they have dates on also ) take pictures of engine in and outside as if decals are original it will date it as well ! take to or email your nearest dealer with all info and they date your engine no problem !

I have a 50 hp 1975 Johnson outboard. When I turn

There is a switch in the control box that locks out the start unless you are in neutral. Open the box and put in a new switch, this is a safty device to keep it from starting in forward and throwing you out of the boat. Jim OMC retired Mech
