Turn on your microphone and say "check audio", an audio wizard will appear and prompt you to re-calibrate your microphone.
A text box will appear, when you hit [Start] the text in the box will appear black and prompt you to begin reading.
I recommend that you wait for a full second before you begin reading. This will give the problem a good idea of what is going on in the background, therefore; when you begin dictating, it will help dragon understand your voice vs. background noise.
In some instances, this error has occured because of a poor quality sound card. In those scenarios, I recommend using a USB Headset!
Andrea, Sennheiser, Plantronics, GN Netcom and Reveolabs make the best ones for Speech.

the workaround seems to be
buy an Olympus recorder (supposedly they issued a patch for DNS 10 in a couple of days)
or
tell DNS that the source is a PDA generating WAV, MP3, etc.
havn't tried this myself yet. some say it it isn't that awful. But I too am very dissappointed.
