When my Lenovo canon x1 sleeps, it disengages my external hard drive. when it wakes up does not detect my external device. to fix this is to restart my computer. How do I fix this? Thank you.
Well turn it off
Control panel (windows?) + power options
usb sleep off
hard drives use lost of power.
and drain any battery fast
there are other ways.
use 3.5" ext hdd, and it has only power park.
or use 2.5" usb to powered dynamic hub USB.
or get some software that is called HDD keep-alive.
that ever 60seconds looks at the hDD and checks fast and this keeps sleep mode on the drive from activating;
here is mine, see that setting, advance power options + custom settings.
and the drive lasts longer too.
not UN-spinning 1000s times a day. ouch

SOURCE: waking up after going to sleep
I have had similar problem. I found, by trial and error, that using Windows hibernate mode actually works every time! Windows makes a "System screen shot" and stores it on hard drive and then powers off. Just be aware that you must ensure enough hard drive space for this. I am using this mode every day now.

Sounds like you've tried all the obvious things. Did you check the BIOS settings and turn off all of the WAKE ON settings in there? Otherwise, it sounds like you might have a third party program which is scheduling without your knowledge (check your start up programs and running processes during normal use). If, when asleep, the machine runs a fan, it may also be waking up for the OS to receive a power or overheat warning message from the BIOS.
Problems with machines not going to sleep when asked are often related to drivers that are not unloading when asked to prepare for the sleep/hibernation process. If you have installed any new hardware (or driver heavy software like specialized encryption or hard drive management stuff) trying uninstalling it and testing the sleep functionality.
Ideas, anyway.
SOURCE: monitor goes to sleep and won't wake up
Yeah, im not sure about how to fix the problem with it shutting down like that, but one option is to go under your control panel and taking off the sleep function, or putting it on a 4 hour timer so that doesnt go into sleep mode anymore. However, the problem is not your monitor but your computer. Id just take the sleep mode off, there is no need to have it on.

I have called HP Technical Support 6 times about this issue and have logged at least 14 hours into the issue. The things they have done are turn all sleep settings in the "Power Options" in the control panel to "never". The problem persisted. Today, they sent my problem to the complaints department, so maybe they will have the authority to do something for my 5 week old setup.
For me, the monitor was in the "other devices" part on the device manager (go to start menu and type device, and the device manager will show up). I went to HP's website to the support and drivers spot and found a patch for the My Display program. This will allow you to uninstall your monitor, just right click the monitor under "other devices" and click uninstall. After you uninstall, restart and your computer will recognize the and put it under "monitors" in the device manager with the updated drivers. After I did this, the monitor hasn't gone to sleep.
