hard drives use lost of power.
    and drain any battery fast
    there are other ways.
use 3.5" ext hdd, and it has only power park.
or use 2.5" usb to powered dynamic hub USB.
or get some software that is called HDD keep-alive.
    that ever 60seconds looks at the hDD and checks fast and this keeps sleep mode on the drive from activating;

here is mine, see that setting, advance power options + custom settings.

SOURCE: waking up after going to sleep

I have had similar problem. I found, by trial and error, that using Windows hibernate mode actually works every time! Windows makes a "System screen shot" and stores it on hard drive and then powers off. Just be aware that you must ensure enough hard drive space for this. I am using this mode every day now.

SOURCE: Vista wakes up on it's own. Never goes to sleep.

Sounds like you've tried all the obvious things. Did you check the BIOS settings and turn off all of the WAKE ON settings in there? Otherwise, it sounds like you might have a third party program which is scheduling without your knowledge (check your start up programs and running processes during normal use). If, when asleep, the machine runs a fan, it may also be waking up for the OS to receive a power or overheat warning message from the BIOS.

Problems with machines not going to sleep when asked are often related to drivers that are not unloading when asked to prepare for the sleep/hibernation process. If you have installed any new hardware (or driver heavy software like specialized encryption or hard drive management stuff) trying uninstalling it and testing the sleep functionality.

Ideas, anyway.

SOURCE: monitor goes to sleep and won't wake up

Yeah, im not sure about how to fix the problem with it shutting down like that, but one option is to go under your control panel and taking off the sleep function, or putting it on a 4 hour timer so that doesnt go into sleep mode anymore. However, the problem is not your monitor but your computer. Id just take the sleep mode off, there is no need to have it on.

SOURCE: monitor goes to sleep and never wakes up

I have called HP Technical Support 6 times about this issue and have logged at least 14 hours into the issue. The things they have done are turn all sleep settings in the "Power Options" in the control panel to "never". The problem persisted. Today, they sent my problem to the complaints department, so maybe they will have the authority to do something for my 5 week old setup.

For me, the monitor was in the "other devices" part on the device manager (go to start menu and type device, and the device manager will show up). I went to HP's website to the support and drivers spot and found a patch for the My Display program. This will allow you to uninstall your monitor, just right click the monitor under "other devices" and click uninstall. After you uninstall, restart and your computer will recognize the and put it under "monitors" in the device manager with the updated drivers. After I did this, the monitor hasn't gone to sleep.

Seagate freeagent keeps dropping disconnecting

Seagate manufactures both internal and external hard drives, and their sleep modes can be managed in different ways. The hard drive is one of the top energy consumers among computer-hardware components, and Windows operating systems support options to reduce power consumption. Internal hard drives are typically turned off and stop spinning ("sleep" mode) after a certain period of system inactivity. However, the system usually takes longer to come back when the hard drive's sleep mode is activated. Furthermore, turning off hard drives may result in failure of some constantly running applications.
Windows includes options to turn off sleep modes for internal hard drives, and external hard drives can be managed using a utility program.

Log in to an administrator account and click the "Start" button in the lower left corner of the screen. Click "Control Panel" and then "Systems and Maintenance." b> Click on "Power Options." Open "Change plan settings" under your current power plan. Note "Radio button" is selected for the current plan. Click "Change advanced power settings." Expand the entry "hard drive" by clicking on the "+" sign. Click on "+" to expand the entry "Turn off hard disk after." Select "Never" for this option and click "OK." b> In Windows XP Log in to an administrator account and click the "Start" button in the lower left corner of the screen. Click "Control Panel" and switch to the "Category" view on the left panel. Then click on "Performance and Maintenance." Click on "Performance and Maintenance" and open "Power Options." The select the tab "Power Schemes." Using drop-down list, set the option "Never" for "Turn off hard drives." Click "OK." b> Using "NoSleepHD" for External Hard Drives b> Click on the "NoSleepHD program" link in Resources. Click "I Agree" and save the program (as a zip file) on your computer. Open a folder where you have saved the file using Windows Explorer. Right-click on the zip file and select "Extract All." Then click "Extract" to get the program file "NoSleepHD v1.0.exe." Double-click on the program (.exe) file to execute NoSleepHD. Click "Select External Hard Drive" in the Program menu and choose your Seagate external hard drive. Choose "10 minutes" under the option "Write File every" and click "Start NoSleep Mode." The program will write an empty string every 10 minutes to the Seagate hard drive and prevent it from going into sleep mode. Hope this helps.

There is a WD utility that controls the drive setup. One thing it controls is the sleep time. This sounds like what you are seeing. I know the default sleep or hibernate time is annoyingly short. All you need to do is run the utility look for the sleep time and change it to a much longer period. I don't think it can actually be disabled but you can set it to an hour or so.

My lenovo z61m computer is going to sleep every three minutes when the above message appears. this problem started when I started using a 500 GB toshiba external hard drive

disconnect the external drive and see if it still happens. If it does, the timing may be coincidence...check the main hard disk for bad sectors.
If this solves the problem, have the external drive checked for bad sectors.
Also with the external drive disconnected, open up a command prompt (or go START, RUN) and type sfc /scannow
this will check the system files for errors and replace any corrupted ones.
NOTE: you will need you OS CD when you go to do this.

If the computer goes into sleep mode, some devices won't wake afterwards. As a test, either disable sleep mode, or open Device Manager, find the adapter or its USB port and set the power properties to not allow the device to turn off to save power.

I hate this drive a want to pull the Hard drive

Basically it was ugly. The drive enclosure wasn't easy to open and got destroyed.
However, on the Bonus side, I was able to pull the drive out and put it into another enclosure and now it doesn't go to sleep unless I say so. HooRay!!
Sadly it isn't on FireWire anymore but on a much slower USB2. But I'll take the USB over the aggravation of the drive constantly going to sleep. It's easier but buy a FireWire enclosure than stopping the sleep cycle.
I don't want to EVER see a Maxtor OneTouch Plus 4 1TB in my office ever again.

Sleep mode

A drive in sleep mode doesnot shorten the life. But old drives in sleep mode are still passively active and reallocating the bad sectors of hard disk. so New disks have no problem. but once bad or weak sectors develop then its unsafe to make it go in sleep mode.
