For error 4014 On the PC go to palmone/user...../ and rename the "exchange" directory to .old When you hotsync again it will work without the error and will create an empty directory. Worked for me with my new LifeDrive and TomTom software. For error 4004 The only thing that worked for me.. Was to do a hard re-set and then to reload each non-Palm problem, one by one, checking each time to see that I didn't get that same 4004 error message. This was time-consuming, but it worked.

I don't know if you have SP3, but if you do, try rolling back to SP2

1. Open the Control Panel
2. Select Add Remove Programs
3. Click to select the Show Updates check box.
4. Click Windows XP Service Pack 3, and then click Remove.
5. Click Finish to restart the computer after the removal process is complete.
Method 2: Use the hidden $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder
1. Click Start, click Run, type c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. When the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Removal Wizard starts, click Next.
3. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove Windows XP SP3.
Method 3: Use the System Restore and select a restore point prior to SP3

Regarding with your HTC Viva / Elf
Try hard reset with phone in "OFF" state following this instructions if it will do;
1. Press and hold the TALK and END buttons, and at the same time, use the stylus to press the RESET button under the battery cover at the top
of the device.
2. Release the stylus, but continue pressing the TALK and END buttons until you see this message on the screen:
Warning! Your device will be set back to factory default settings. Please ensure any additional installed programs and/or user data have
been backed up before a hard reset is performed.
3. Release the TALK and END buttons, and then press ENTER on your device.

Hi
what is the drive doing or not doing?
If it is a connection problem then start by rebooting and seeing if your scsi card sees the drive in the bios and once the OS boots see if it is seen by the OS and has correct and up to date drivers.
from here

If the backup program also sees the drive then try a backup and see where it fails.
Is it always the same file/s?
is it usually the same distance into the tape?
Have you tried new media?
if it is a read / write problem then try a new cleaning tape as they do expire after a few uses.
Then try a brand new tape on a test backup or run the LTT HP diags program which can be found here.

Just run the lto standard test program and that should tell you if it is faulty. Dont run the long tests though as they take days and are designed to really stress the drive and repeated running just wears the drive out and makes any problem worse.
If it still fails then you are going to need to send it for repair.
