Connect speakers to computer audio output.
Howdy Anonymous,
Generally the cord for lap-top speakers
(safely stuck in the side of your laptop
(head-phone jack))... 3.5mm
(tip, ring & sleeve (three conductor plug: both ends)).
Since you didn't DISCLOSE your make & model...
I'll tell you about mine... BOSE, MediaMate similar to
BOSE's newer Companion... Similar to these
Amazon com Bose Companion 2 Series III Multimedia Speakers for PC with 3...
But older than dirt... Balance & Volume ...Still sound terrific...
Exactly like these:
BOSE MediaMate White Computer Bookshelf Desk Speakers eBay
The speaker has it's own power source and the
"MATE" has no knobs, plugs or switches...
So if you have sound on your head set you are good to go with these speakers...
Helpful...??

Note: Some speakers get power using a USB cable instead of an AC adapter. Ensure that the computer is powered on, and try a different USB port, if available. Both the USB cable and audio cable must be connected for the speakers to work properly.

SOURCE: Dell Inspiron 6000 PC Audio Ports Damaged
You should have sound from the speakers at all times until headphones are plugged into the jack, the jack then overrides the speakers and allows you to listen using the headphones. If the speakers aren't working, it's because they're being overridden by the damaged jack. The only way to correct this is to replace the faulty jacks. You could get a set of external speakers, the con is they're bulky and inconvenient.

Simply use the external video port. It may require an adapter depending on the monitor you plan to use.
