SOURCE: PS2 Wont Play

I hope your in the right posting area, this is for the Phat PS2 consoles with the drawer that comes out to put the CD in. Procedure is different for Slim PS2.

  1. Disconnect power and turn the case upside down.
  2. Remove the screw covers to expose the case screws. These are little square pieces or square rubber pads. You can use a thin knife blade to pry the hard plastic squares up.
  3. Remove all the screws.
  4. Remove the Warranty sticker to the right edge of the power socket.
  5. Turn the PS2 over to set it right side up.
  6. lift the top cover from the back and pull it forward slightly to clear the CD tray. Be careful of a possibly Ribbon cable attached to the lid going to the Reset/Eject buttons. Roll the cover over to the right leaving the ribbon intact.
  7. Remove the CD tray lid.
  8. Polish the Laser lens, and remove any lint or hair from the CD area. Use Alcohol and cotton swabs to clean the laser lens. By the way, Alcohol will damage a PS2 Slim lens. All lens are not created equally.
  9. Hook up the power and A/v Cables.
  10. Remove the little white disc from the CD tray lid.
  11. Place a Disc on the spindle, and cap the disc with the little white piece that you removed from the CD tray cover.
  12. Boot up the PS2 and test it, Continue cleaning until you get it to work.
  13. Put it back together, and you’re in business.
If you have trouble you can send your PS2 to the Playstation Clinic for Repair. Contact [email protected]

SOURCE: ps2 trouble loading

Hi DanDancooke,

I believe your PS2 is extremely dirty and full of dust and lint. It needs to be opened up and cleaned out throughly.

I hope your in the right posting area, this is for the Phat PS2 consoles with the drawer that comes out to put the CD in. Procedure is different for Slim PS2.

If you have trouble you can send your PS2 to a Repair shop. Click on "Repair Directory" at the bottom of this screen. then choose "Video Game Consoles". Then you pick a Good Repair shop. My shop is listed, but I cannot divulge the name in this forum. Cost will be $25 plus shipping. Shipping is usually $8.95 to the USA

SOURCE: disc not spinning browser/configuraion display on screen.

  1. Check to see if a Music cd will spin in the console
  2. Open flip lid and examine the reset switch - check to ensure the switch is intact - you are looking for a small lever which is made of lack plastic. If its not there you need a new reset switch
  3. If the laser is not moving at all you will need to open up the console (WILL OBVIOUSLY VOID YOU WARRANTY!)
  4. Check the PCB switch at the rear of the console. This part connects to the lid of the ps2 if thats is broken you will need to replace - difficult to source but they are available
  5. Check the ribbon cable underneath the PS2 Laser for any signs of damages
  6. Check the ribbon cables x 2 which attach the laser assembly to the motherboard
  7. Remove the motherboard metal shield and test the SMD (SURFACE MOUNTED) on the underside of the board use a multimeter for this
  8. If your console passes all these tests the most likely cause is a blown laser which is a simple part to source via ebay etc.
  9. If your new laser does not fix your problem then you have a blown RS2004 chip which is expensive to replace and usually not economical to do.

SOURCE: ps2 syas browser or system configuration when i

Is the time accurate or is it off? There is a battery in the consoles that keep the time and other system settings updated when the console is off or unplugged. Over time the battery gets drained. So on older machines when you power it on, the PS2 sees that its time is off or otherwise thinks it is being turned on for the first time and makes you do the inital setup. The solution? You can try cracking open the PS2 and replacing the battery. Don't ask where the battery is located at inside it because it varies from version to version of the motherboard in the PS2. But if you search the forums, some locations have been suggested.

My PS2 always does that now. Just make sure it's reading the disc in the System Browser, and it'll play fine.

Browser shows no data on PlayStation 2 Console

I am having the same problem with my PS2, but I have an HDD inside of mine. I am told this is a circuit problem inside the PS2 that doesn't allow the information to be transfered to the RAM. That's why you see “No Data” instead of the usual problem of “Disc Read Error”. I hate to say it, but it sounds like you are going to have to do the same thing I am about to do. Send it in to Sony and get it repaired.

I am also pretty sure this PS2 you are talking about is the large fat one, and not the slim one.
