Turn on the camera, press the menu button, press left on the d-pad until you are the top of the menu structure. Choose the CSM Menu by pressing right on the d-pad. At the top of this menu is Menu Reset. This should do the trick, if I've understood your question correctly. Remember that for every dial setting on the top of the camera will have separate settings.

Extra Tip: If you want to see the effect of a menu option, while the menu item is selected, press the Help button, the one to the left of the LCD that has the ?/Key marking. This will give you a brief help description of the action/setting.

When I push '-' to make image smaller screen goes black

Check your setting in "Custom Functions". Sounds like your "-" (or more specifically your "*" button) has had a feature enabled. I had my "*" button set for focusing - under Focus Settings in Customs Functions. If in doubt reset all Custom Functions to their default.

Have a nikon d70, lent it to friend who messed up all the settings. is there a way to reset the camera? thank you

You can perform a two button reset. This can be accomplished by holding the BKT button and the metering mode button simultaneously for two seconds. Review page 111 of the D70 manual details which settings are restored to factory default after performing a two button reset. Custom settings are not changed.

Good luck!

Looking to reset to original factory settings

On the camera's menu system, under Setup2, look for the option titled "Clear Settings". When selected, you can either clear just the Custom Settings, or you can clear all camera settings, which restores it to the factory defaults.
