My wife and I had the same problem, and after messing with some of the settings, I figured out the solution (at least on my TV). In the lower left corner of our Vizio remote is the button for changing the picture aspect ratio. This will not work for changing the aspect ratio on the built in Smartcast screen. You'll notice if you select any of the numbers you'll see a small box in the upper right corner of the screen with a smaller blue box. The numbers 1-9 navigate the smaller (zoomed) box onto 9 respective parts of the screen. If you press the number 0, the screen should return to normal. This worked on our Vizio, hope it helps for your television.

We would be happy to help you get that fixed. On the DISH Network remote press the "*" button located in lower left corner of the remote. Press it repeatedly to rotate through different
screen shape settings until arrive at the desired format.
We hope that this helps get your picture corrected. Thanks for choosing DISH Network!

You would look for a format button on your remote.
Dish Network: bottom left the asterisk "*" button
DirecTV: top left, second from the top labelled "format"
Cable remote: look for format, zoom, or aspect ratio
Pressing this button should scroll you through the options.

6/09 I had the same problem when receiving the signal over the air with the input set to TV. Perhaps the signal strength or type was varying. At any rate, after I hooked up HD cable and watch from that input, the problem no longer occurs.

Was exactly what you said. The cable box settings were in wide mode. Couldn't figure it out at all. Funny thing was too.. on my cable box remote, the button under the #9 button is the # button.. it doesn't say zoom at all.. but it totally controls the zoom.
So thanks for that.. AND thanks for saying "under the #9 on the cable remote" instead of just saying .. the zoom button.
Thanks again!!!

Stuck in WIDE? Me too. Based on the info below, from VIZIO support website, I think the TV defaults and locks on WIDE if you use an HDMI connection. You have to interpret the language a little bit, but he last sentence seems to imply that the TV automitically displays WIDE.
Aspect Ratio
Aspect ratio refers to the images height vs. the images width. The current industry standards for this are 4:3 which square and 16:9 which is more of a horizontal rectangle shape. Most all television broadcasts are 4:3 except for high definition broadcasts. Due to the resolutions required for high definition it will always be broadcast in 16:9.
