Confirm that engine will rotate.
Confirm voltage at battery during crank attempt minimum 9 volts at crank, 12 volts at rest.
Confirm greater than 9 volts at starter when cranking.

Need additional information...Check to see if it is the new battery or the electrical system first........ when the battery is "up", disconnect from the system. Remove both wires from the battery...connect the next day and see if the battery will crank the mower. I've experienced new battery's that have an internal short....Let us know whether battery or John Deere electrical system.....and we can troubleshoot from there...
