If you are connected useing the component video cords (red,blue,green,red,white) it sounds as if you have the red,blue or green cords connected to the wrong color of jacks on the back of the TV or the DVD player, recheck your connections.
If all is good there, maybe one of those cords are bad?
The Sony DVP-SR200P DVD player is on the bottom end of their model line up, and you may have received a bad one right out of the box!

Cycle through caption settings until it goes off, each time you push the caption button it goes to the next caption setting then finally back to the the begining.
Your TV will need to have (CC) capability.
To view Closed Captioning (CC) information from a DVD using the CC function of the television, turn off the Progressive Scan function of the DVD player. If the DVD player doesn't have progressive scan then follow the instructions from your TV manual to setup closed captioning.
