My 2009 Sonata had the same problem, my wife returned home from taking our child to school and was unable to shift into reverse or park, also unable to remove her keys from the ignition when she finally left the car parked in neutral.
Solution: Replaced the faulty BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH actuated by depressing the brake pedal, even though the brake lights still functioned the switch controls numerous functions. Parts total $20.00 Dealer's diagnostic fee: $110.00... yes it still hurts, but it's better than the torque converter going out as a previous poster had mentioned.
Over the brake pedal there is a plastic switch that often comes loose and when it comes loose the brake lights will stay on killing your battery. Check to see if it moved if it did push it towards the brake pedal rod that the switch touches and tighten the nut and it will go off. If it comes loose again or this does not work at all the switch needs replaced.
hi the brake light switch is just above the brake pedal .when you press the pedal it takes itself off the switch and the lights come on then when you take your foot off the brake the pedal reconnects with the switch putting the lights out.
This sounds like a bad brake light switch, this switch is located on the bracket that holds brake pedal, you can test for power at switch, also if you remove connector and jump terminals with a wire and see if lights lite, if lights light then switch is bad,
there is a tsb for the brake switch in 06 sonatas. it must be adjusted or replaced by dealership. is your check engine light on, if so its probably code p0504
