on mine, I messed it up the first time and then had a difficult time getting it to do it again. so after messing with it a bit, I hit the tare/on button 3x in a row, and somehow started the process over. it registered a number over 3000, I then hit the tare button one more time. It said cal and 2000. I hit it one more time, and it said 4 .65 (ie 4 lbs .65 oz) - it is a 5lb scale.

Before doing this, I measured about 6 oz or so (prob slightly over) into a measure cup, and added that to a 4lb bag of sugar. so when it said 4.65, I put the 4lb bag with the added 6 oz of sugar onto the scale, and it said pass. That seemed to reset it. In order to test it, I measured out a few ounces of sugar and weighed it.. and it came out very close to the amount it should (there could have been slightly more or less in the tbsp I used so I think it worked out right)

**make sure you get the right amount or as close to it as possible for the calibration amnt (in my case 4lb 6 oz) because whatever you put on the scale that is close enough, it will take that as being the right amount.
