Just a guess - the power supply is likely a switch mode type with short circuit and overload protection. Your description suggests there is an overload condition somewhere and the power supply is shutting down to protect itself (and other components).
There is a problem with the back light LED's. When the unit powers up it senses too much current draw and it shuts down and shows the problem that you have.
