I need a new 6V ( part no 2300-4061) battery for coleman HWOD (original 2300 model). It is no longer available - is there an alternative I can use?

The bulb is a halogen car bulb. Take it to your local auto parts store like Canadian Tire.

take it along as a sample to any battery shop and they will have a battery to suit

If under warranty have it repaired/replaced. If not under warranty then some basic troubleshooting. Most likely a battery issue howerver;


To test the fencer output you can power the fencer from either a standard 6V lantern battery (6V fencer) or a standard 12V automobile battery (12V fencer). You need to rig wiring observing polarity.


To test battery, remove and check voltage with digital volt meter.
A fully charged 6V SLA battery should read 6.2V minimum and a 12V should read 12.4V minimum. If a 6V battery measures 4 volts or less then battery has likely failed. Likewise if a 12V battery measures 10 volts or less it has likely failed. Before replacing a suspect failed battery, connect the battery to any standard 6V/12V automobile charger and see if it will take a charge. After the charging period;

• If battery takes a charge, reinstall back in fencer and see if fencer output is hot. If fencer fails output, repair/replace fencer. Else verify the fencer is charging the battery. While battery is installed in fencer measure battery voltage with a digital volt meter. Typical minimum voltage is 13.5V for 12V and 6.7V for 6V. If fencer fails to meet minimum battery charging voltage, likely the fencer solar charging system has failed, repair/replace.

• If battery fails to charge, likely battery is end of life. However fencer could still not work. Test fencer with alternate power source (see previous tests). If fencer ok, replace battery.

You need a 6v lead acid battery with 4.5ah, available from maplins for £5.99 (13/11/10)

There are many model of the 6V/4.5Ah battteries available as you will have to choose the make and warranty period the dealer gives for eacch.
If you can get a 6Ah with the same size to fit inside it will be ideal.
So call your nearest battery dealer to confirm the prices and decide onthe make..

The battery is built into the photo pack, so in theory you get a fresh battery with each photo pack.

In practice, all photo packs are now significantly out of date as they're no longer made. This means that the batteries are usually dead or on their last gasp, and as the photo packs are expensive they're also a waste of money when the battery dies straight after ejecting the protection sheet.

Some packs are advertised as having been kept refrigerated: this is fine for keeping the instant photo chemicals fresh, but cold kills batteries even more quickly so these packs are only suitable if you have modified your Polaroid 600 camera to take an external 6v battery pack (original battery is actually 4.5 v, but 6v is easier to find and does no harm at all). Modifying the camera is a bit fiddly though as it was never designed to be dismantled and often breaks, but there are millions of them lying unused and freely available so although getting photo packs is difficult and expensive, the cameras usually cost nothing.
