You may need to rebuild your Multi-Port assembly.

SOURCE: No green comes out in backwash

Alge will quit often go through filter so first you need to kill the alge by super chlornateing the pool. You can take a water sampel to your pool store and give them the size of your pool, they can test your water, for nothing in most cases and recomend what you will need for this. Then you can start cleaning the mess up as the dead alge will turn to dirt. This dirt will be very fine and may go through your filter also so a cup full of D.E. in your skimmer after backwashing will usually coat the top of your sand and catch much finer dust and dirt. Do this as you clean the pool and backwash 1-2 times daily till clean. Follow all directions given to you at store to kill the alge first, this is very importiant.

SOURCE: I have 7 year old Hayward ProSeries, S-244S, H/R Sand filter. I've notice that when I vacuum the pool, dirty water returns to the pool. I've backwashed and the spider gasket is fine. No sa

sand filters only have limited filtration. If the dirt is very fine such as dead algae, it will go right through the filter. Use a clarifier to help give the filter finer filtration. Do not vacuum until you can see what you are doing, then vacuum on 'waste'

SOURCE: My new Hayward Pool Sand Filter won't backwash.

Hey!
Mine was doing the same thing. I had the hoses switched up. I had the hose from the pump connected to the port marked RETURN (on the Hayward vari pump valve). Not good! I also had the return line hose (from pool) connected to the port marked pump. It happens! The problem is I tried EVERYTHING ELSE before I found my error. This includes a trip to Leslie's to buy a brand new multi port valve (good thing they have a return policy) AND changing out my relatively new sand in the filter AND taking apart the vertical tube and each individual flange at the bottom to clean them out. Please check your hoses FIRST if it won't backwash! By the way...I've been a pool owner for 17 years. I think my experience worked against me since I didn't recheck my work at setup.
NOTE:
It might SEEM like your filter is working because you get suction at the skimmer and water rushing thru the return line into the pool. It's not working if your lines are backwards like mine were! My water started turning green!

I have a Hayward High Rate Sand Filter and the controls are unreadable. Can anyone tell me how to determine what location backwash, rinse, etc?

All hayward stickers are replaceable at you local hayward retail store but easy way to know where backwash is usually the bottom of dial usually patent number is at bottom, Filter at 12 o'clock, waste at1 o'clock, backwash at6 o'clock, recirculate at8 o'clock rinse at10 oclock

I have a hayward s166t filter, guage reads 0 and sight glass water does not swirl when backwashed

Does it show pressure when in "Filter" mode?

If not, then your pump is either not primed, Impeller is plugged, or there is not enough water in the pool, you are sucking air.

How to use backwash to waste

When the filter get clogged the pressure in the filter increases and there is less water flow returning to the pool.
If your filter is a sand filter, when you turn the valve to backwash and turn on the pump it reverses the water flow in the sand filter to flush the dirt out of the filter to waste. Look at the window openning in the waste pipe and keep the backwashing goinging until you see clear water.
Then turn off the pump and move the control valve to Rinse, turn on the pump for a few minutes, this returns the water flow back to normal but the water goes to waste to make sure the sand filter is clean.
Turn off the pump and move the control valve to filter and turn on the pump. This mode is the normal operating mode and the pressure gauge in the sand filter will show a drop in pressure.
Some pressure gauge shows a red section to indicate when backwashing should be carried out.

Recommend backflush pressure of a hayward pool filter

After you have backwashed your filter until the site glass run clear. Go to rinse mode for 30 seconds. Make note of the filter pressure. Don't backwash until the pressure goes up 10 psi!! It is important not to backwash too much. As pressure climbs the sand filter actually filters better.

Hayward sand filter not filtering small particles

You probably have too big of pump. It is pushing the finer stuff right back into pool. Try adding a clarifier. Don't backwash either until the pressure goes up.

Sand filter not catching little debris

Filter is being bypassed at backwash valve, due to poor spider gasket in valve, or there is a broken lateral in bottom of sand filter, causing debris to return to pool..
