GE Top loading normal (not HE) washer. Will not fill with cold water - when set on cold, nothing comes out. When set on warm, or hot, hot water comes out. Cold water will come out for rinse cycle. Had problem yesterday, then this morning was able to wash one load in cold. Since then, have had to wash all in hot. Checked to make sure cold is turned on, but cannot find any other normal things to check. Any help would be HUGELY appreciated!
Ok - tried that - screens are clear. But, while I had the water turned off, I checked to see if it would come on. When it was on warm or hot, it hummed, like it wanted to fill up (water off). But when the cold was on, there was no hum, so I assume there is an electrical issue. Is there only one specific part it could be, or are there several components that could be the culprit? Thanks for the help! For the time being, I tricked the washer and switched the hoses so I can set it to hot and have cold water! Yes, this is normal. All newer washer have auto temp control fills. This is to meet energy saving requirements. The less hot water used the more energy saved. Most hot settings on washers give out basically lukewarm water. The detergent made today is made to work well with cooler temperature water, so things will still come out clean.
If you checked the screens at the water inlet valve and they were not clogged, then you probably have a defective water inlet valve and will have to replace it. Hope this helped.
Cold water pipe had become frozen. FYI this model of washer has a nice feature whereas you can test each component i.e. valves, by setting the timer and reading the LED's on the front panel. Instructions are in the schematic.
If you hear a humming, the coil on the water valve is probably OK. On warm, you are getting cold fill only. (hot + cold = warm) Take the hot water supply hose off the machine and look inside where the hose attached to the washer. There should be a screen inside. Remove it and clean it out. Also, check both ends of the supply hose, as sometimes you will find a screened washer in there too.
Yes patrick you can try removing the cold hose from the washer, look inside the valve for a metal screen. If it has sediment blocking it remove screen, clean it and reinstall. If still no water replace inlet valve.
