I had the exact same problem; my tape icon was flashing red with a line through it and the recorder would not record, no matter how hard I begged it to. After a full day of frustration, I called the videographer who had used it previously. There is a little trick.

1. Open the exterior tape door with the "Eject" button.
2. Wait, dont touch the tape. The little metal encasement will pop over and open within a few seconds.
3. To properly put the tape in, insert tape, push the little metal door that sais "Push this first".
4. Then push the exterior door closed.

Voila! Thats all there is to it!

SOURCE: Canon XL2 wont record or playback tapes - grey lines.

The video heads may be clogged. Depending on the severity of clogging, if minor, you can clean the heads with the head cleaning tape other option would be manual and direct cleaning by technician. First, open the tape loading area for dust removal by canned air, clean pinch roller with Q-Tip using denatured alchohol and try it. If it did not do the job. Assigne it to a technician for about $99 for a professional cleaning. Good luck -James. For further assistance by email, go to www.camerarepairjapan.com

Camera: Canon XL2 My camera has got jammed. Tapes refuse to play. I understand that I need to change the entire recording system. What is the technical name for that system and how much does it...

It is usually called the "Transport assembly" or "Transport carriage" and is quite often the most expensive portion of the camera (motherboards can be pricey, too). They often cost upwards of USD $200-300.

Every time i place the tape in the red tape on the screen blinks and the camera wont play or record. it does not recognize the tape.?

indicates a problem with the head or the tape sensors. Either the head needs a deep clean by a professional or the tape sensors have failed. Either way, it's an electrical problem caused by normal wear and tear (possibly a bit of rough handling in the case of the tape sensors) or a mechanical problem with the same cause, in which case the cassette carriage/loading mechanism might need looking at as well.

Canon XL2 wont record or playback tapes - grey

Sorry to hear your situation, usually when serviced by a technician, head and tape path is cleaned and adjusted. During use you will encounter pixelation problems occur and most case tape cleaner should resolve the problem. Your condition is where if all the system is ok and have a heavy clogging on the heads, requires technician to clean each head manually to bring it back. so look for a camcorder repair facility locally and get cleaned. If you cannot find one, the service is provided for around $100 at www.camerarepairjapan. Good Luck

Canon xl2 playback

I DON'T THINK YOU HAVE A PROBLEM EXCEPT TRYING TO USE A GENERIC TAPE TO RECORD IN HD AND THEN EXPECTING IT TO PLAYBACK IN HD. IT WASN'T MADE FOR THAT AND WON'T WORK FOR HD. IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE A HD CAMERA, YOU NEED TO USE THE CORRECT HD TAPES TO EXPECT THEM TO WORK AND PLAYBACK CORRECTLY. WHY WOULD YOU BUY ONE OF THE MOST EXPENSIVE CAMERAS ON THE MARKET AND THEN USE A $2.00 TAPE AND TRY TO PLAY IT ON A $2000.00 CAMERA AND WONDER WHY IT DOESN'T WORK? BUY GOOD QUALITY TAPES.

LCD won't project

You may have a problem with the image sensor device (CCD). From October 3, 2005 through October 2, 2007, Sony will repair, free of charge, affected products exhibiting the above-mentioned problem where it is caused by the image sensor device. Sony will also cover the cost of shipping and handling from and to addresses within the United States and US Territories for service to correct this issue. To see if you have this problem: Power On your camcorder (make sure the battery is fully charged). Check the LCD screen and verify that the display icons are turned on. If you cannot see the icons, press the Display button until the icons are visible. Put a tape in the camcorder. With the lens cap off, record some video. NOTE: Be sure to speak during the recording so the video will contain your voice. Rewind this section of the tape (using tape counter to verify start of your recording). Play back the recorded video and use the LCD screen on the camcorder to view it. You should hear the audio you recorded and the Display icons/text will still appear. If your camcorder is affected by this CCD issue, the picture will either be extremely distorted, or there will be no visible picture (just a blank LCD screen with the display icons still visible).
