Stopped or Won't Start
If the washer won't start or has stopped during a load, verify it has power. Plug a nightlight or other device into the power outlet to test it if you can easily access it. Otherwise, check the circuit box for a tripped breaker. Open and close the lid or door of the machine. If the washer stopped during a wash, adjust the load so that it is balanced. Check if the drain hose is clogged, and clear if needed. Turn the machine on with dry hands. If it still won't start, unplug it or turn the circuit breaker off, then back on until the breaker firmly clicks in place and plug the machine into the outlet. Push the restart button. Some machines may require you set the knob to a specific setting for the reset feature to work. On some machines, hold down the button labeled "Start-Pause" or "Stop" for a slow count of five. Turn the washing machine on. Run a rinse and spin cycle to check that washer is working and that the error code, if applicable, cleared.
Washers Without a Reset Button
If it isn't possible to access the washing machine's plug to manually reset the washer, turn off the circuit breaker. Leave it off from 30 seconds to 1 minute, depending on the machine model or instructions in the owner's manual. For washers with a knob control, turn the dial clockwise to any cycle other than "Final Spin." With button controls, select any cycle other than "Spin." Check that the water to the washing machine is on. Turn the breaker back on. Turn the washing machine on. Some machines require that you open and close the lid six times after plugging the machine in to reset the motor.
When Reset Doesn't Work
In some cases, after using the reset button -- or resetting the washer manually -- nothing happens. Your machine may have a problem or a faulty part that keeps it from operating. Among the most common are problems with door switches, latches or a faulty timer that may require replacement. Authorized technicians can replace parts or service the washing machine as needed. Websites of major manufacturers have replacement parts available to order and some provide schematics or answer your questions. On a recent-model washing machine, check if it's still under warranty.
Programmable Washing Machine
Certain programmable washers have a reset function. This function clears an unintentional "Delay Start" command and resets controls in the case of a program error when the machine won't start. The method of resetting varies by make and model. In certain models, turn the knob to reset with the power button "Off." Select the desired program. Press the power button to restart the washer. In other cases, if the machine has a "Cancel" button, push it to clear the error and then push the "Pause" or "Stop" button to reset it. Consult the handbook for the washing machine for the correct procedure that applies to your model.
