A baste stitch is basically setting the machine to a straight stitch with the longest stitch length available. Loosen the top tension slightly if you want to remove the basting later.

I have a Brother XL 3500 what do I set the dials on for a basting stitch

What is the stitch length for a basting stitch?

Basting a Seam for Fitting:

At the sewing machine, set the stitch length to 5mm. This will make it easy to remove any unwanted stitches. Sew the seam at the desired seam allowance. After fitting and the adjustments have been made, sew the seam with a normal stitch length of 2.4mm.

How do I set the machine to do a basting stich

if the machine can do a basting stitch the information should be in the sewing machine manual, if you don't have a manual, add a comment with the name and model number of the machine and someone should be able to help you find one.

or you can also try youtube for a video

Kenmore 1941 sewing machine irregular stitches

try rethreading the machine top & bobbin make sure to get ever thread guide
try chaning to needle, make sure the needle goes all the way into the needle holder-normally flat side goes to the back of the machine
check to make the thread is moving smoothly around the tension dial
if these suggestion don't help, then the machine probably could use a servicing

No problem :) I have been using this machine to make all sorts of things. The thick and thin layers issue is mainly in just having too much. I have been trying to design my own re-usable moon pads, and there are many layers to that, and depending on what fabric you are using (I have been using a combo of fleece, felt, waterproof layering and more fleece), but it handles it just fine as long as I adjust the settings to take on that thickness, and don't run the stitching at full speed. I have made some curtains, pillows, blankets, patchwork purses, etc......and I have been so happy with it. There is enough variety of stitches to keep preoccupied with for some time, and it comes with an overlock foot and stitch which is really nice, since I don't have a serger, but can still get that "serged look".
Not to mention that being a belly dancer, learning to sew and make my own costuming is just priceless. In my humble opinion, couldn't be happier with it and it's great for all around.
Have a great night!

I had this problem but have resolved it (for the most part) by lowering the needle down into the fabric before beginning to sew.
