The zoom out feature does not work anymore with the zoom lever. It works via the slider control on the screen but not with the lever. When the lever is employed, the camera focuses, but does not zoom out. The zoom in feature works fine with the zoom lever. I have tried all the settings that I can think would be related to this problem and have removed the battery and replaced but no success so far. I have also reset all settings to factory settings via the menu system. The fact that the zoom works fine with the slider control on the screen seems to point to a setting issue and not a mechanical problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is a symptom commonly listed for DiMAGE cameras listed on EBay for 'parts only'. Dropping the camera I had caused the same problem and carefully 'smacking' the camera once again did solve the problem but that may have been dumb luck. Sorry but it is a service task that may cost more than the camera.
SOURCE: Rebel xt will focus but wont take pictures
I had this issue just this morning, and came here for a solution.
Problem: Camera functions normally except it will not take a picture, let me autofocus, or bring up the light meter in the viewfinder.
Attempted Solutions: First turned it Off/On. Then Switched lenses, same thing. Removed/replaced battery, changed settings. Removed the lens, and it takes a picture, replaced the lens, and it still will not. Then I came here, and heard that it was most likely an issue with the lens contacts. I've heard of Rebels having error 99's which were contact errors, and canon's official solution was to use a pencil eraser (like the one attached to the back of a No.2) and gently rub the surface of the contacts with it, and it worked in that situation.
Guess what? This solution worked instantly, and my camera is back to normal. I don't know if it will work long term yet because I just tried it like 10 mins ago and only after taking down all of my lighting equipment, but all seems well.

Set camera to P mode.
Press [MENU ] to display the [SETUP] menu
and select the item to set.
The [REC], [CUST. SET MEM.] or [SETUP]
menu settings are reset to the initial
settings.
• [FAVORITE] (P98) is fixed to [OFF] and
[ROTATE DISP.] (P97) is fixed to [ON].
• If the [SETUP] menu settings are reset,
the following settings are also reset.
See page 22 in manual.

This should reset whole camera to factory setting.
Cheers.

I had the same problem w/ the same camera. My wife fixed it by doing this: holding down the pictue snapshot button and the video record button simultaneously. Low and behold, the focus came back. I was amazed! Try it.
