Just bought a 73 Johnson 115 that's been stored for two years wondering what kind of Preventive maintenance should I be worried about before taking it out on the lake?

I had it running just for a few minutes, with the garden hose and the attachment for outboard motors and it seem like the water pump was operating to my knowledge water was circulating properly. Just looking for other Preventive maintenance I should be worried about before taking it out on the lake.

Change lower unit lube, use fresh gas mixture with added Seafoam. Run as before, but longer. You can download manual from the web. Has P.M. instructions.

Carbs probably need to be cleaned and re-built. Common problem in outboards that havent been run in a while

Dont have the manual in front of me...recollect that there's two types of warnings. The pulsating warning is oil (starts with 30 minutes of oil left) or the fuel filter (or sperator, something like that) may have water in it. Running outboard with cover off, is a little black box that would have a red light lit if that's the case. If oil full & no red light, may be oil injection system...would also check to make sure lines aren't pinched, etc. Mine has been specific to oil the two times its gone off.

The full non-pulsating is engine overheat. Not sure beyond that.

Not much, but hopefully gets you going.

SOURCE: new 1/2 hp jet pump with tank not working

Your hose size is to small. Use a 2in black plastic line out to the lake. Inspect your foot valve, and
take your pump apart to see if you may have a pebble stuck in it, and remove the inner workings
and clean. Contaminates build up inside and need to be flushed out. Remember to replace the
gasket. Tighten all your hose clamps. Once your ready to start, spray shaving cream on your
fittings to see if your sucking air. I've been through it all and my pump works fine.

SOURCE: 40 Hp Johnson outboard motors stalls out after a

May likely be one of two problems:

1. Fuel flow: Make sure fuel tank vent is open and not blocked while engine running. Check primer bulb is working and no air leaks along hose anywhere. Check function of fuel pump and ensure fuel is getting to the cylinders.

2. Overheating: Check engine isn't overheating and that water pump is operating properly while engine is running.

SOURCE: 1974 Johnson 70 hp outboard, quits on acceleration.

It sounds like your motor is starving for fuel. At an idle, you have adequate flow to keep the engine running. When you call for more fuel...you sputter and quit. Could be a clogged filter or trash in the line or in a jet. Yes you will have some air in the bulb, but not a great deal. You could be sucking air at a hose connection (loosing some prime)...try this, start the engine and slowly accererate, have someone pump the bulb as you accelerate, see if the engine works properly while doing this test.

I have a 40 s Johnson seahorse td20 with serial number 63191 , and I was wondering what year model is it? I gave 280.00 for it, did get a good deal ??

the serial number is not consistent with johnson serial numbers as all have 2 letters followed at the end by 2 numbers which indicates the year of manufacturer 9 ( ft17598 indicates it was mahe in 98)
There are pages on the net explaining when a serial number is used but it must be old as johnsons have used model numbers for identification since 1960's
probably better if you take it to a johnson service dealer as they may have the johnson factor list for serial numbers as you will have to identify it to get parts
go google and type in manufacture date of 40s johnson td 20 outboard serial number 63191
if that shows no results just cahange some words in the search

PM light is on on console

The PM light means that has come time for a preventive maintenance to be done on the copier, if the copies are still good, then you do not need to hurry up with calling a technician to do the preventive maintenance.
Don't worry you can still make copies until you notice something bad with the quality of the copies

Preventive maintenance?

You should buy some c.l.r. (calcium, lime, rust) remover. It's packaged in a grey bottle at any supermarket, drug store, ect.Pour a cup in and run a cycle once a month. This will prevent any lime build up from scaling the dishwasher due to hard water.
