1. Turn on your iPod (in my case it would only get as far as displaying the Apple logo
2. Hold the power and home buttons down (the iPod will power off after 10 seconds, but keep holding those buttons down)
3. After the iPod powers off, release the power button (but keep holding the home button down)
4. After a couple more seconds, you should hear that magical “ding dong” that means the iPod is coming back alive, and that Windows has detected it. You may even see a little “New hardware” popup in Windows. It is now safe to release the home button, and your iPod is in DFU mode.
5. Now iTunes will see it as a DFU’ed iPod and should ask you to automatically restore its firmware.
6. iTunes has to download the new firmware, and it takes a while, so go make a sandwich.

Your hard drive is bad. If it's still under warranty you can contact apple support, if not you can obtain a new hard drive with install kit.

Ipod shows sad face

Aye, my friend had this exact problem before i came along :-)

First: Reset your iPod by quickly moving the lock to lock position then back to unlock position, then hold the menu and center button down till the apple logo comes up. Then you can release the menu and center buttons.

Second: Plug your iPod into a power supply, such as the apple AC adapter. Wait till it shows that its charging. Once it shows that, unplug it, reset your iPod once more, then plug back in.

Third: Keep your iPod plugged in after the second reset for about 15-20 minutes. Come back, unplug it, and use it and see if it continues. If still continuing, plug it back in till its fully charged, or the equivalent.

After that, If that doesnt fix it, try contacting Apple Support here: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/.

Hope I helped!

Ipod shows sad face and folders

the sad face means there is a software / hardware side fault witch needs service.

Start with these five simple solutions: Reset, retry, restart, reinstall, or restore…

www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/

If they dont work you will need to send the ipod in for service.

My ipod shows a sad face

Hopefully your ipod is still under warranty, because this is indicative of a hardware problem.

You could try to force it into disk mode and do a restore, if that doesn't work then it needs to be sent in for repair.
