The last two nights while watching movies my receiver has periodically been shutting itself off. When turned back on, it lists "Check speaker wires". I've checked and plugged them back in, but the problem continues. It seems to be most prominent during loud action scenes - watching the movie Taken, during gun shots, it turns off!. And, it's not occurring when the receiver is in the TV/satellite mode - it just happens when movies are being played.
Any suggestions or ideas appreciated!
Since this is only happening when running DVD I would troubleshout surround sound speakers/ subwoofer or whatever speaker you are using when watching DVD and is not in use when watching TV:
1.) Make sure the speaker wire is not shorted at speakers as well as at receiver. Depending on method used to connect the receiver and speakers you may have short circuit even when you think you connected receiver and speakers properly.
2.) Make sure the polarity of the speaker wire matches the receiver.
Sounds like you have the polairity reversed on the speakers
and yes it does make a difference
check polairity also make sure unit is well ventelated
you wouldnt use your compouter if it was inside a card board box
so make sure the reciever can breath also
recievers get too hot and they start blowing chips off the board

Thanks for your comments, but my speakers have been hooked up the same way for six years - the unit is also well ventilated. Today, my kids watched tv for hours with no problems - this issue only occurs while a DVD is being played.
