Verify you are using the correct needles for your machine. Some needles vary by a fraction of an inch but will make a big difference in serging success.

Remove all the threads from the machine.
(Always cut the threads below the spools, raise the presser foot, and pull the threads DOWN through the needles--Never pull up!)
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading.
Be sure to always thread each thread in the proper order--threading out of order will usually fail.
Rethread from the beginning and give each thread an extra little tug when threading the tension disk.

If a thread breaks, it is usually less frustrating in the end to remove all the threads and rethread from the beginning. Trying to rethread a broken thread will most likely cause problems.

I am struggling to get the perfect tension on an Empisal Overlocker S4D, using viscose fabric which is a soft drapey fabric. The top stitches look OK but the bottom loops are very loopy!

Suggest threading your machine with 4 different colors of thread and then testing it on a scrap of your fabric. With the colored threads, you will be able to tell which thread tensions need to be adjusted. The type of fabric you are sewing may also be causing a problem. Be sure to use brand new needles!

The overlocker does not pick up the second needle when overlocking

Be sure to use brand new needles.

Check that the needle tension is not too tight.

If it continues, it may have a timing issue where the needle is arriving at the wrong time to pick up the looper threads.

My overlocker is skipping stitches, I have re threaded it and replaced the needles and oiled it, it is still skipping stitches. any ideas as there is nothing else in the manual to tell me what to do>

Check to make sure you have the right needles and that the thread and needles are compatible. Usually, coverstitch machines use a slightly longer needle than overlockers and sometimes people get them confused. Also, it might have something to do with the fabric you are overlocking. Try stitching a different kind of fabric and see if it is still a problem.

Loopy stitching

Skipped stitches
1. The needle is not inserted correctly
Remove needle & reinsert needle( flat side towards the back of machine)
2. The needle is damaged
replace with new needle
3. The wrong size needle is being used
Choose a needle to suit the thread & fabric
4. The foot not attached correctly
Check & attach correctly

Machine not sewing

Make sure you have threaded the machine from right to left, it sounds like the needle thread is trapped under the lower looper thread and cannot form a stitch.........start the threading over from scratch like this:

  1. Lower Looper
  2. Upper Looper
  3. Left Needle
  4. Right Needle
Is there a diagram for how to thread on the inside of the door ?

Follow that slowly and carefully to make sure you have not missed any thread guides on the way, as each one needs to be followed through to ensure correct tension and thread progression.

If you are certain that all threaded correctly, did you have a fabric jam and pulled it loose ? If so, the timing may well be affected.

Post an update and we'll get this right.
