Hi Robert , can you clarify what you mean by a trickle charger ?, any chance of a photo of the charger ?
using a standard gel battery charger , the charger will charge the batteries in question and once fully charged, the charger will trickle charge the batteries.. This is a standard operation and recommended by battery makers...

does the light go on when on charger? if so its just a completely flat battery. you might not need a new one, charge it for half before you try to switch it on again
