SOURCE: john deere 2010 tractor. pto grinds and wont engage

The PTO usually has a clutch that has to be engaged so that you can select the PTO rotation setting. I had a problem like that on my tractor and all it needed was a little adjustment on the PTO clutch lever, so it could disengage the PTO gearbox properly.

percussive maintenance my friend. Try banging on the solenoid and starter with a hammer while in the start position. Also, if you have a voltmeter, you can see where voltage is getting to and that will help you as well.

SOURCE: John Deere 445 pto will not start Smoke from

If smoke is coming from solenoid on rear top side of trans then internal windings are bad but usually it will blow the fuse.Remove plastic nut from solenoid, slide solenoid off shaft then engage PTO.If solenoid does not smoke slide screwdriver or something like it into solenoid and see if there is any Magnetic force. If smoke comes from deck check idlers and spindles for movement.Be sure to ckeck gearcase oil level on the deck.

SOURCE: problem with John Deere L120 tractor

Park brake switch is the most likely culprit, any other would cause the tractor to not turn over in the crank position.

SOURCE: Jon Deere mower LX277 won't crank

Try replacing the starter solenoid. If that doesn't do it, try replacing the whole starter.
