The engine is starving for fuel,running lean,when a load is applied and extra fuel is needed,there is none. Water or dirt in carb bowl,clean carb bowl and main jet !
if this is the one with gear shift on fender , i suspect the gear shift got hit and bent a bit as this happend to me , you need to remove gear shift heat with propane torch and rebend to not rub the inside , you can see it better if you look under fender and try to move it
The shifters do run cables to the transmission but you likely only need to remove the panel from the right side that covers the shift rods and then you can tighten the 13mm nut that brings the linkage rods together,the nut is on the shift lever not the range lever,Let me know how you make out and if i am wrong also let me know and i will dig deeper.
With engine not running,pull lever towards rear of machine then move from one side to the other.If this does not work your linkage is locked up externally.
