Go to the Singer site and click Support, then Instruction Manuals and fill in your model number. I checked -- it's a free download, and it's there.

Go to the singer website
Go to the home page
Go to customer service--click on it--it will show a small menu--click on instruction manual
In the box put the model number (example 401a) & click search

I also have a German Singer 431G. Haven't been able to find a Service Manual
for it. The guts are probably very similar to the US Singer 401A, you may be able to refer to that.

Something is not threaded right on the top, or the thread is tangled. Take the thread completely out and rethread. Also, make sure that no thread is caught in the bobbin area, if necessary take bobbin casing out and clean with a brush. Always turn the handwheel towards you, never away from you because it can mess up the timing, Also google Singer 401a there is a great blog on this machine

This machine is vintage status and manuals may be somewhat hard to come by as they are considered a strong plus to sell with an original. I don't think anyone would just give it you for free because they will generally sell standalone on ebay for 10 to 15 bucks.
