How to get non-hd DD or DTS sound from blue-ray on old receivers

It is not necessarily what features you have to look for, it is what connections you need to look for. Most blu ray players have the hdmi ports. On my blue ray I found it and it has the fiber optic end. I have used that and to me it sound just as good.

Onkyo tx-sr806 reciver ''DTS HD''

hdmi connection between player and AVR. Right?

I am sure you would have also done the first time setup and set all the 7 speaker as well as the subwoofer thru your auto or manual speaker set up and that the reason you are getting Neo6.

On your Receiver, please also check the format of the digital input signal thru "Displaying Source Information" Press the [RECIEVER] button, and then press the [DISPLAY] buttorn repeatedly to cycle thru the available information.

a).. If the information shown say that DTS - ES Discrete, DTS- Matrix, DTS -HD and so on.... then we need to check as to why the receiver is not accepting the signal.
b).If the information shows otherwise and a 7.1 signal is not availalbe, then its possible that the source(in this case the BD player/or the recording is not sending the required signal).

lets take the case (a). In this case if you have all the 7.1 set up in place and you are getting the required signal , then you can assign a default listening mode to each input source that will be selected automatically when you select each input source.

Press [RECEIVER] button followed by [SETUP] button and enter listening mode setup, use up , down buttons to select the input source that you want to set and press [ENTER].

then use [up], [down] button to select the signal format that you want to set.
then use the [[LEFT] and [RIGHT] buttons to select a listening mode.

When you are finished, you can press [SETUP] again.

The above is with experience with ONKYO AV Receivers. In case you have a problem , please let me know so that I can go thru the SETUP menu of your particular receiver i.eTX-SR- 806.

HOpe the above sort out. DO let me know.
Please do rate this solution and thanks for using FixYa!

No surround sound from my PS3 through the Onkyo 5100. Video OK

Unfortunately only the higher end Onkyo Reciever pass audio over HDMI for sound. 605,705,805,905 exc. Your reciever will carry Video over HDMI but you will need a digital optical cable for sound.

What Blu Ray to buy for ONKYO TX-NR801 for Dolby TrueHD, etc???

Hi, as the Onkyo receiver you have does not have HDMI switching, the only thing it will do for you with a Blu-Ray player is process the audio signals.  The video from the BR player will have to go directly to an HDMI input of your hi def TV.  In this case, either Sony or Panasonic BR player will be equal.  Assuming you keep the Onkyo unit you have, you would want to use the optical digital output from the BR player as the audio source into one of the optical, digital audio inputs on the Onkyo.  In an ideal world, your receiver would some that does do HDMI switching.  This way, all the audio and video signals from any audio or video source would be automatically switched and channeled through 1 simple HDMI cable into your hi def TV.  This will make you life simpler as ther would be no need to select an appropriate input on the TV, as well as one on the receiver.  That said, buying a new receiver in addition to a BR player is more costly.  Good luck.  Let us know how it goes.

In the menu is an option for switching master and true hd on. Standard its of and played als normal dts/dolby.

also: check the input (blu ray?): maybe it is set to only output no high def signals, so the amlifier doest recieve hd sound..

I cannot seem to get DTS-HD master to show on the receiver screen

You need to check 3 things:

1) DTS will only work through a digital connection (coaxial, optical, or HDMI) between your receiver and dvd player. DTS and Dolby 5.1 cannot carry a signal over red and white rca connections.

2) After number 1 is solved ensure the reciever is set to the digital channel, your DTS-HD in this case, or in an auto mode.

3) Finally the most important is that the signal is a DTS signal. Start a DTS capable dvd, go to the sound menu and set it for DTS.

Press play and all should be well...

HDMI SOUND

True HD can only work with HDMI interface and is only available on some newer HD DVDs. Check the DVD to see if the True HD encoding is available.
