Hi, I have a 13.5hp Briggs & Stratton motor which starts and will only run on choke slow rpms and mild smoke.

History: bought 2nd hand ... not running but dipstick smelled of gas. Cylinder was hydro locked with fuel (wouldn't crank either) Changed oil and cleaned plug... engine started and ran fine. Shut off, the next morning the fuel tank was empty and the oil was full of gas. I found the fuel tube o-ring was pinched and leaking above the float and bowl. Changed the o-ring and separator gasket.cleaned all jets etc. Now, no leaks but only runs on choke. Bought a new carb and it has the same results. Fresh fuel, new hose and filter, fresh oil. What next? This is a gravity feed system without fuel pump (Nikki carb)

For those who would like a laugh. I finally found the problem. As I said 2nd hand mower and not running. Apparently this mower was recently in the shop several times (found 4 shop ID tags under the hood). While servicing the carb, the mechanic .... STUFFED A SHOP TOWEL IN THE CARB EXTENSION PIPE and left it there. I only found it by taking the OHV head off (towel was sucked into the intake valve chamber). Just enough fuel and air to keep it puttering.

    thanks for the infomation
that is one reason I always recommend accredited service centers as their mechanics are suposed to be properly trained
but I guess even the best make mistakes

Check the point where the fuel hose goes to the fuel tank
there is very fine filter in the hose that could be blocked preventing full fuel flow
only running on choke indicates insufficient fuel flow

Testimonial: "Fuel runs freely through the line. I checked by taking the bowel solenoid off .... draining about 2 cups of fuel out. Good flow also."

next check the float level and fuel flow into the carby--could be a problem needle and seat area

Smoking and loosing power

Blue smoke means engine worn or too much oil in sump.
Black smoke is caused by too much fuel being sucked into carburettor.
This can be caused by a dirty air filter, choke being left on after engine is started or fault in choke system if automatic choke fitted.

21 hp briggs on husky mower runs fine but intermittently acts like it is flooding ie.it starts losing power and i can see small amount of black smoke.if i pull the choke on easy it will stall.sometimes...

I had the same problem with mine. I talked to briggs help line and that was useless and also talked to 6 other repair shops. Seems to be a dirty little secret they are keeping about the defective carbs they use. Only way to fix it is to get the redesigned carb they have out now. They changed the fuel bowl and solenoid assembly. Carb kits did me no good.

Motor runs good, starts good, but smokes. do i need a gas treatment? thanks.

if its running with the choke stuck on it will smoke it will be black smoke if the piston oil ring has worn out you get blue smoke,,and you can smell oil in the smoke there is no treatment that fixes worn out piston rings,,,only fitting new rings will fix that

Motor will run fine with the choke on , but push

The governor is out of adjustment. It will be located on the side of the engine with a rod pointing downward with a weight

Briggs and stratton runs good for 5 minutes then starts to smoke

My first thought is that the throttle lever is being pushed so far forward ( max RPM's ) that you are running the engine 1/2 or better choked
Look at the choke butterfly with the throttle in your normal run position it should be completely open
This may require and adjustment in the control rods or might be as simple as not pushing the throttle wide open

Engine won't start unless you us starting fluid then it runs fine

Starting fluid is REALLY bad on this engine.

Try WD 40 before ever using starting fluid.

Time to change the plugs. and look at the choke for proper adjustment,

Next start using a fuel inhibitor along with some gas treatment with your fuel, this should clear this little V Twin up.

This motor has a history of bending push rods, make sure you change your oil every 30 hours.

Hope some of the tips help.
