A manual may help:

User Guide Manuals LS 2020 Others Brother

There is only one tension dial, the round knob above the needle. Standard setting is the midway point between high & low number. The other two knobs are the stitch length and stitch width dials. With the stitch length knob, zero will make the machine sew in the same place, so you'll want to set it probably midway (the higher the number, the longer the stitch). With the stitch width dial, zero will sew a straight stitch--the higher the number the wider the stitch). Spend about 30 minutes reading the manual and you'll probably be able to use your machine. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the top thread so the thread will seat properly.

I have a Brother JX2517. I went to mend something...and at first the knob was turning the parts inside correctly. However, after refilling a bobbin, the knob didn't connect, the hook wouldn't move.

Make sure the bobbin thread is comming off the bobbin in the correct direction. Usually clock wise. If it is not, the machine will not stitch, or will tangle the thread.

My brother electric super ace 11 sewing machine stitch program stopped working can you mend it yourself!

Depends what exactly is the problem. However, if it is a computerized model, it would probably be best to take it to a service technician.

My stitching on Brother ls 2020 sewing machine is loose. How do I fix the problem

Without more description of the stitch symptoms, the only suggestion is that the tension is too loose. Whether it is the upper, bobbin, or both tensions, we cannot answer without more information.

Does my Brother SQ9185 sew backwards other than the push button backstitch?

Use the reverse button. That's what it is for. Sew forward and then push the button and sew in reverse.

If you have a darning foot, you can use it (drop the feed dogs) and then you manually move the fabric around while stitching.

I have a Brother LS-1717 Sewing Machine, it was given to me, without the manual. My thread keeps jamming and the thread is lose on the fabric. Also I have these dials on the front and I can't figure out...

You really need a replacement manual and Brother is excellent about providing them. Go to http://www.brother-usa.com/manuals/ if your machine was sold in the U.S. If not, you'll need to contact Brother International.

Loose thread and jams usually mean the tension needs adjusting. If the loose threads are on the underside of the fabric, it means that the tension on the top thread is too loose. Be sure to have the pressure foot down when you adjust the tension and only move the dial a tiny bit at a time. Also, when you begin sewing, hold the top and bobbin threads securely in your left hand for the first few stitches. That bit of tautness helps prevent 'birds nests'.

Hope this helps!

My brother LS-1520 sewing machine is having major tension problem

Try some metal bobbins, #15 or SA 156. that seems to help. If, you don't have a manual go to brother.com and download one for free

The underside stitch is a mass of loose thresd

A mass of loose thread on the bottom of the fabric most likely indicates a total loss of upper tension. Remove the upper thread, raise the presser foot and rethread the machine. Make sure that the upper tension knob/dial is around 5. If you still have a problem, let me know what brand and model you have.

I have a brother LS-1717 sewing machine and i do not know what all the dials are suppose to be set on, for basic sewing

Try setting all your dials on the middle numbers, ex:# 5 if it goes 1-9.Check your manual if you have one. Check on scrap material with every project and adjust tension accordingly.
