I really am not sure, but try going; Start, Control Panel, Sounds & Audio Devices and see if that box has some adjustment perimeters that might help you.

If that doesn't work, go; Start, Control Panel, Add Remove Programs. Then you can remove it and try re-installing it. Sometimes that will fix strange bugs like this.

you'll need a proper driver installed for Win XP system. Skype and other are using their own set of drivers.

To install speech recognition by using Add or Remove Programs, follow the given steps:

Click Start, and then click Run.
