it is normal to listen a bit of noise because the zoom motor is not always really silent, and if your sound recording level is hight and there is not much action going, then you'll ear the motors,
sometimes it can be because of too much using it (if it didn't make same noise when new)

Vista is very fickle about what it can and cannot regconize, so i suggest going to the website of sony and see if theres a driver, also you might want to check the device to see if theres a button or switch to change the HDD mode.
if you keep getting unrecognize usb device, then maybe your usb drivers are screwed, might need to clean out your computer of bad drivers and usb drivers, see if theres an update for your motherboard check with you appropiate motherboard provider. good luck

The camera is probably configured to record to harddisk now. Select your Pro Duo memorystick as the record media thru the menu's (select the memory stick icon), and you'll be able to see the stick content.
Do you know what language it is in now? Page 10 of the manual explains the procedure. If you cannot find the language setting type the words into Microsoft Word and use the translate function. It looks like the language setting is right after the clock. Eric
