Humidifier leaves film everywhere!

Hello!
My new humidifier is great except that it leaves a white film on the furniture.....I'm concerned that whatever is being left everywhere is also being inhaled by us.....is it necessary to only use purified water? What is the white film?? My e-mail is [email protected] product is actually AOS U7142, but I couldn't find it on the list below.....
Thanks!

    Hi Everyone

My woman bought a Homes humidifier and that white film is all over our mobile home. We are always wiping down all our electronics. We can't seem to find info. on this. Our humidifier DOES NOT have any filters and we think this is caused by extream hard water. We live in Fort St. John, BC , Canada. If you have any imput into this ,please leave your coments.

    Thanks

    Mark

I have the same problem with the Venta 370. I doubt it's the humidifier at all, and agree, it must be a hard water issue.

Leave white film mostly on plastic type surfaces. Doesn't leave film as much on wood surfaces.

i have the same problem with an air-o-swiss - it was a very expensive humidifier and its all over everything.
i thought it was the silver cartridge that keeps the water clean so i took it out and it persisted.
does anyone know what this is or what to do about it?

I talked to Kaz, a manufacturer of humidifiers, and they said this is referred to as "white dust". It's simply the minerals from your water settling on your furniture...I had to same problem so I called the manufacturer.

He said it's not dangerous but that I should use distilled water in my humidifier from now on since my water will always do that. He also stressed the importance of cleaning the unit weekly with a bleach and vinegar solution per the manufacturers specs.

The problem isn't just the white film on the furniture. It was also clogging up the filter in our forced air furnace. This is the first ionizer humidifier we have had and we got rid of it and went back to the evaporator kind we have always had before. Problem has gone away never to return.

Thank you!
hey Perno - be careful with bleach and vinegar together - i'm not sure if its true, but i heard somewhere its poisonous and pretty harmful together.
maybe google that combo before you start cleaning.
thanks for the white dust info...

Actually, it is dangerous. If not for my Dyson purifier suddenly indicating dangerous levels of particulate in the air, I would never have pinpointed that the source of my cat's developing persistent asthmatic cough, was my new humidifier. This is not benign, it's completely unhealthy. In fact their coughing persisted after removing the unit, and up until every surface was cleaned. I can only guess where else it's accumulated as it has even settled inside closed drawers.

It is so fine, this dust cannot be filtered. With the amount of mineral being pumped into the air it can get into the lungs. I have never seen this much dust with any humidifier in my life. It is excessive. What is the point in buying all these filters it requires when it's not actually filtering anything? Buying distilled water is impractical and yet another expense to get a passable result from this already expensive unit. I really think think there is a deeper problem here. In my research it seems this became an issue since Boneco took over. I wish they would address this problem. Customers are out of pocket, and unknowingly exposing themselves, children, elderly, and pets to possible health problems.
I can't in good conscience even give it away. Unfortunately, these Air-O-Swiss units go to the landfill. Shameful.

I had this white film before I bought a humidifier. My place is so dry that I need some moisture in the air so that I don't shock myself all the time. The film is also inside of my drawers. My humidifier is a small one so that is not the cause.

Forget the fancy cool white mist humidifiers that leaves all the white dust! Just get yourself a warm mist humidifier without the hassles.

The humidifier says "desired humidity" when turned

I would say, either the humidity level in the room is hi or the humidifier is defective, In my house the humidity is about 42% to 45% when we use the humidifier, and can drop to 30% or less if we don't, we leave in DC area,
I hope this helps.

There is not mist coming out. What should I do??

The moisture released by this (or any ultrasonic) humidifier should not be visible, so it is very possible that it is working correctly. Try filling the reservoir and marking the water level with a small piece of tape. Then run the humidifier for a few hours, and check the water level again. If the water level is below the edge of the tape, then you know it is releasing moisture into the air, and everything is working fine.

The older style of humidifiers created a mist by spinning a disk that was partly dipped into the water reservoir. They had to be refilled often, and the mist could leave water spots or dust on nearby furniture. The water level should change very slowly in your ultrasonic humidIfier compared to a misting humidifier.

This is a great humidifier...but it's leaving a white film on everything! How do I stop this?

Your water is too hard. Get a water softener or use distilled (not purified) water.

I have two questions. How do I properly clean my humidifier and recently it has started coating my furniture with a white powdery film. Why has it started that?

there is some cleaning tablets you can use periodically called protec beads ... cleaning can be done using high acid vinegar soak .. then hydrogen peroxide can be used on any mold .. this unit as well as ultrasonic type models will put out calcium dust if your water has calcium added or is hard water .. calcium is often added to water to give it a good taste .. one way to keep the unit clean for a long time is to use only distilled water .. and make sure there is no calcium added .. (read the small print on the container) .. its hard to clean the fan chamber in this unit .. lots of people complain about the dust .. the wick/filter type humidifiers dont put out dust but the calcium does accumulate on the wick/filter .. so you have to change that frequently (6-9 weeks) .. yours doesnt have a wick but still needs cleaned regularly ..

The date - February 23, 2010 - 6 days ago, I purchased a Sunbeam Humidifier from my local Walmart - Lake Geneva, WI. I really thought I had made a wise purchase - very quite, and was raising the humidity...

Im not going to recomend a humidifier because I need one myself and have not went shopping yet.

I would like to opinionate an explination on the white haze.

The humidifier is putting moisture in the air -water is much much heavier than the air - water is much much heavier than dust particles also.

therefore my theory is that the moisture is combining with the dust or whatever is already in the air and then eventually settling. perhaps if this is correct you may want to do some checking around in your home or furnace ducking or even furnace filter. The dust could even be coming from a little pin hole in your clothes dryer exhaust hose.

Humidifier creates film on everything in the room it is in.

the white film is just dust particles from the unit. it's also a bit of condensation that is building up. the particles are not harmful. but it's nice to keep it clean after every use. also the film is coming from the vicks. that is normal. so nothing worry about as far as harming the childs air or anything.

White dust coming out of humidifier

A concern is minerals in the water. Impeller and ultrasonic designs send these minerals into the air. If the water in your area contains a lot of minerals, you will notice them as dust. The EPA does not issue health warnings about minerals in the air, but does recommend using low-mineral water (such as distilled water) in your humidifier. Many ultrasonic models feature a demineralization cartridge that filters minerals out of the water to prevent the dust.

Good Luck

Produces a ton of white dust... Why???

Your V5100N ultrasonic humidifier generates a fine mist by vibrating the water at an exremely high speed. The water doesn't actually evaporate until after the water mist is in the air. As the tiny water droplets evaporate in the air, the calcium and other minerals settle on your floors and furniture.

Humidifiers that evaporate the water in a filter wick, or with heat, do not generate dust because the water evaporates inside the unit and the calcium is trapped inside.

You can avoid the dust problem with your humidifier by using distilled water. Distilled water is available in most stores that sell bottled water in gallons...but be sure to choose "distilled" water, not "purified" water. Try the distilled water in your steam iron also...if you have one. It will last longer.
