SOURCE: Wont Record

Usually when a tape starts to play automatically this means that the tab on the back of tape has been removed to stop others recording over it check the tab little black tab in a recess on back edge of tape if this is missing you can put a bit of sellotape over the whole to blank it off this will tell the video tape is ok to record on.
However if the tab is still in place the try putting a small bit of tape over it also to raise the clearence slightly then put back in video and try to record if this still dont work then the mechanism that detects the tab has failed these can be replace but usuall parts are hard to come by now as they no longer make vcrs any more but let me know ok i can assist you further just check tabs in place even try raising it with a bit of card stuck over tab with tape this might make the tab switch work if it has wonr down abit let me know ok.
As you look form back of tape the tab is bottom left hand corner check its flush with the tape if not use sellotape to repair let me know the outcome ok

On play back I have sound but no picture

You just need to clean the video heads. You can get a tape cleaner for this, or you can do it manually.

To do it manually and it's the better option. You will need a can of Servisol Video 40 (from places like Maplin or on the Net). Some cotton buds.
Remove the top cover of the video. Once done, spray all the parts the tape touches with Servisol. Wipe any visible dust and dirt away with the buds.
Concentrate the spray to the big video head. That should look clean when done.
Leave to dry, it won't take long and try a video. If you can see the picture, but it is breaking up or has "sparkles" on the screen. Then clean the head again till it is a clear picture.

Notes: don't clean with a tape in the machine.
If you don't know which parts the tape touches. With the lid off and powered on play a video. And watch where the tape goes.
It will take longer to clean the video if anyone smokes in the room where the video is kept.
I repeat NEVER put a tape into the machine till the deck is dry.

You might have to do this again a few weeks months later.

Our Hitachi MX818E VCR is suddenly not playing videos. We can hear the sound however. We do not have the user manual anymore. Thank you, Ann

a common problem is rental videos that have been damaged in the first few feet of the tape by some other vcr's defective drive mechanism that "eats"the tape..What happens is the particles of the damaged tape clog the video heads in your machine, which have gaps in the millionths of an inch.Put a brand new tape in the machine and let it play for a half hour or so and it will usually clear itself. If that does not do it,insert a head clening tape and a couple drops of cleaning fluid and run it through. The newer machines will show a blue screen if there is no video information present. However,if you put it on forward search,it overrides that feature and you will see a snowy picture from a good tape,if one video head is clogged and the other is working. There are 2 video heads on a rotating head.it spins at 1800rpm and that is the whirring sound you hear when play is pressed. If both heads are clogged, you will see a snowy screen and no picture at all.A 4 head machine has 2 heads for slp or 2 hour speed and the other 2 heads are used for lp and slp.A hifi vcr has 2 more heads, which are used for the hifi audio,a total of 6 heads. The stationary playback head has a control signal for tape speed, and regular audio, mono or stereo.

When playback of tape, fuzzy, not clear picture, or blue screen with sounds

try rewinding the tape and play it from the beginning.if still the same, video heads may be dirty and needs to be clean.i recommend you use a dry head cleaning tape.after which reinsert tape and play it again.if issue persists use a diff tape with previous recordings.if still no go,use new tape and try recording on it,play it back and check.if still the same your unit will require service.thanks:) hope this help.

Tracking seems off

I have had the same problem. There is no way to manually adjust the tracking on this Hitachi, or on most 8mm cameras, for that matter. I copied all of my more recent tapes to DVD first (2 copies of each) and then I went to the oldest tapes, which for some reason were OK. When I got to one tape that gave me trouble, I just let it play in the camcorder for about an hour. It adjusted its own tracking so that the picture was OK. Then, I rewound the tape and copied that one. I still have 2 tapes that will not adjust. I am going to send those out to a copying service. I hope they can adjust the tracking and make the copies I need.
By the way, I used this camera and a Panasonic DMR-E55 to make the DVD copies.

Video Head Problem

it could also be tape path alignment, either case you will have to send it in.

Tapes won't play

This is an indication that both data heads are dirty. In a digital camcorder both heads need to be operating correctly to obtain a full picture. Insert a new cleaning tape and run it for only 10 seconds or less, this should clear up the problem. Avoid using the tape that caused the problem. Do not use the cleaning tape for regular maintenance, this will damage the drum surface. Good luck to you! Joe Weibel Custom Electronics (customelectronics.org)
