Vertical blanking Picture has 4 inch blanking strip across the pic at top. At other times, the blanking bar may be in the middle of the picture with the bottom of the picture in the top half of the screen and the top half in the bottom of the screen. Of course it's blanking, sync, picture centering in middle of screen and extending down to bottom and up to top down to middle. This is surely a recurring problem. I replaced the vertical IC451 and seven (7) vertical electrolytic caps. No change

    Troy,

Thanks a lot for your suggestion. It had no effect on the set, and after a while the customer gave up on me and took it home. They then contacted Sears and Sears is trying to fix it now.

I really appreciated your help. We win a few and lose a few. I'll call on you again.

    Thanks.

I got multiple thin colors on the middle of the screen

My 3-year old 52-inch Toshiba flat panel TV (Model # 52RV53U, Serial # AM409000295) developed a display issue (purchased Aug. 2008, manufactured July 2008). Vertical multicolored lines appeared on the screen just left of center. The band of thin vertical bars is 5.5 inches wide. The lines are about 1/16-inch wide. They are stationary, always exactly in same place. They over-ride any other picture on the screen (no transparency). They are there all time even with no video inputs to the TV after the unit is turned on. See picture #1. The TV works well in every other respect, but, obviously, it is annoying to watch the picture with the color band blocking about 1/6 of the picture.

Further info, pics, comments, and updates on my Facebook page at

I already swapped out the TCON board with no improvement and replugged the TCON board cables with no improvement.

Most likely it is the flat panel tab bond failure (panel made by Samsung). Further updates will be on my Facebook page.

Screen went to a 4 inch pic in the center of screen, then total black. All other functions work, just no pic

if the picture shrink into the center of the screen about 4inch then goes blank. you do have problem with your vertical drive IC, it's either loose contact with the board or the vertical IC already malfunction.

TV Picture Reduced to Line across the Middle

This is called field-collapse. Either

1. The problem lies in the vertical deflection voltage-doubler circuit. The usual fault is a single capacitor of 100uF/35V that has failed. It is normally connected to a rectifier diode right at the vertical IC. Replacing the capacitor usually gets it working perfectly again.

or

2. The vertical drive IC has failed.

If you are finicky around technical work, then a reputable local repair shop in your locality should do it quickly for you and charge only labour.
