May need to download proper driver if Windows doesn't install them automatically. Power down plug in and restart.

The Acer 5100 appears to have a couple USB ports from what I've seen. I'd suggest just plugging it in. USB doesn't require a restart. If that doesn't work, the keyboard might need batteries (is it wireless), or it might just be broken. Try another keyboard, or another USB port on the laptop.

Maybe your thumbdrive is the problem try to format the thumbdrive first

Dear friend.. the same happened to a customer's laptop.
I suggest you do the following:
First, try to scan your harddrive for viruses in another computer (you can buy a cheap 2.5" USB enclosure for your drive and use it as an USB drive). Once you do that, clean from viruses.
Next step is reinstall the disk and boot the machie again.
If it's a virus problem -as it happened to me- the BIOS block itself and nothing responds, so, you'll have to cheat BIOS.
Plug a flashdrive (any kind) and wait to windows recognizes and installs it. Once it's done unplug it and plug a USB keyboard and/or mouse and wait. Once you have control power off the system normally (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO UNBLOCK THE BIOS).
Next time you power on your computer, keyboard and mouse should work great.
Hope it helps.
Greetings, Pablo.
PD: One advice... you will probably have to reinstall windows. And finally try linux... this won't happen with it.

.There are a lot of virus' that will disable your USB ports. You can change the settings in the registry to enable them again.
Open registry (START > RUN> type regedit) and navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet \Services\UsbStor
Now in the right pane, double-click Start and type 3 in the Value data box (Hexadecimal) and quite the registry editor.
